For better or worse, hiring and promotion still rely on the filtering mechanism provided by peer-reviewed journals. Universities should think seriously about how to collectively incentivize reviewing and editing (e.g. via direct payments, using leverage on publishers, etc.).
Jay Van Bavel, PhD@jayvanbavel

The peer review system is cratering. I've heard a ton of stories like this at many, many journals. Even prestigious, high impact journals are having trouble getting reviewers. The review process is getting longer and less reliable. My guess is that AI will make this much worse unless something changes. In the meantime, the best hope is to share pre-prints and circulate them widely.

.@SECWAR “All the nations represented in this room are offspring of Western civilization. Our nations are and always will be united by our heritage, history, and geography in this New World. We share the same interests, and because of this, we face an essential test. Whether our nations will be—and remain—Western nations with distinct characteristics—Christian nations under God.”

Maybe digi folks have figured out how to produce content that actually persuades and mobilizes and I just haven't heard about it yet. I'm totally open to that possibility! In fact, I hope they have!

Q for this & similar projects: how will you measure what content persuades/mobilizes? I've yet to see digi folks measure success beyond views/likes. I've even seen them hype a post as "effective" bc it had a huge # of impressions, when that post was ratio'd with neg content.

It’s incredible what is happening right now. We have ground truth on what happened in Minneapolis, high quality vid from multiple angles. -A citizen approached ICE agents with a phone, in line w 1A rights -They escalated by tackling him to the ground and violently beating him. -While doing so, they found that he was carrying a gun. A 2A right. -After disarming him, with the gun well away, the citizen was shot multiple times until death. This is all in video, for anyone to watch. It’s not “multiple interpretations”, this is liars vs ground truth.

Secretary Noem offered assistance to New York ahead of the impending snowstorm.

I shared that the fastest way to help is for ICE to back off so people feel safe accessing warming centers, shelters, hospitals, and houses of worship.

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

I worked with the Biden White House and DOJ to develop a policy on when can federal police shoot at a moving vehicle. DOJ adopted it in 2022, and as far as I know, it hasn't been repealed. Here's what it says: "Firearms may not be discharged solely to disable moving vehicles. Specifically, firearms may not be discharged at a moving vehicle unless: (1) a person in the vehicle is threatening the officer or another person with deadly force by means other than the vehicle; or (2) the vehicle is operated in a manner that threatens to cause death or serious physical injury to the officer or others, and no other objectively reasonable means of defense appear to exist, which includes moving out of the path of the vehicle. Firearms may not be discharged from a moving vehicle except in exigent circumstances. In these situations, an officer must have an articulable reason for this use of deadly force." You can find the policy here: justice.gov/archives/ag/fi…
