🚨🚨 BREAKING!!: Poland, Europe’s biggest fur producer, has just banned fur farming!! For over a decade our team in Poland has been relentlessly campaigning; investigations, rescues, and hundreds of protests. This is proof that change happens when we never give up!

Connor (once a one man band) of Open Cages has now become @anima_uk just read their newsletter and I’m delighted to see the hard work continue to reap results. I’m here to promote veganism but I fully support Anima and @ciwf for the work they do for farmed animals here in UK n 🌍

Good to see various climate campaigners calling out the recent "greenwashing" from @KFC_UKI, @NandosUK, @wagamama_uk & more. No reasonable person would put "let's make animals grow so fast they can't walk" on their list of ways to reduce emissions. thetimes.com/life-style/foo…

This step back won't go unchallenged. Companies must keep their promises to chickens, and we're committed to holding companies accountable. Over the past few months we've been planning a major campaign to do just that. 🐥 Follow us so you don't miss it. 📣💪

"Frankenchickens pose the most serious animal welfare problem in the UK," comments our CEO. "These commitments created hope to resolve these issues, and abandoning them is letting down not only millions of animals but a nation of animal lovers."

Incredible. Fast-growing chickens represent one of the most cruel farming practices in existence. @waitrose has taken a stand against it. Now an entire country. Nothing's stopping other major UK companies from getting together with industry and solving this problem.

🚨Norway to end use of Frankenchickens by 2027! Now it’s time for the UK to step up. Retailers and brands like @KFC_UKI, @GreggsOfficial, and @Pret can solve this. Norway has proved this shift is possible when companies and industry work together and prioritise a solution.

The Norwegian chicken industry has agreed to phase out both ultra-fast-growth chicken breeds and the routine killing of day-old male chicks. That is a big deal for animal welfare. It will directly improve the welfare of more than 70 million animals per year. And it offers a model for how two of the world's worst animal welfare problems can be solved. Today, most of the world’s chicken meat comes from just two genetic strains: Cobb 500 and Ross 308. These birds have been intensively artificially selected for rapid growth and feed efficiency, at the expense of their welfare. As these birds grow, many struggle to support their own body weight. In one large study of Ross 308 birds on Norwegian farms—already higher-welfare than US farms—95% showed some degree of lameness, and 25% had moderate to severe lameness (Kittelsen 2016). Genetic over-optimization also drives the routine killing of male chicks in the egg industry. Layer breeds are optimized for egg production, not meat yield, so the chicken industry has no use for the male chicks. The result is that billions are killed on their first day alive. More humane alternatives now exist to both practices. Slower-growing, higher-welfare chicken breeds are already used at commercial scale. And in-ovo sexing technologies allow hatcheries to identify male embryos before hatching, avoiding the need to kill live chicks. The US chicken industry claims these alternatives aren't viable. But the Danish, Dutch, German—and now Norwegian—industries are all adopting them. They show that consumer and citizen pressure can end even the most entrenched factory farming practices.

America's two top fast fast chains -- Subway and McDonald's -- are now 100% cage-free. I remember when, in 2007, we thought it was a big win that Burger King agreed to go 5% cage-free. Battery cages, one of the cruelest human inventions, are now firmly on the way out.

149 million hens in Europe live their entire lives unable to spread their wings. Trapped on wire floors. No space, no rest, until their bodies give out. This is why the EU must finally end cages. Add your voice to the public consultation at act.opencages.org🐔💔
