Q: You've called for repealing women's right to vote, which is protected by the 19th Amendment. Why? Pete Hegseth's Pastor, Doug Wilson: Because it's a good idea. A lot of women wouldn't agree. I don't want women voting as individuals

Per @SethWickersham: When Bill Belichick and the Patriots divorced in 2024, Sean Payton considered presenting Broncos owner Greg Penner a proposal for the ages: Hire Belichick as head coach until he reached 15 wins, enough to break Don Shula's career record of 347. Payton would temporarily step down to assistant head coach and run the offense, then move back after Belichick became the all-time leader. In the end, it was too complicated -- and maybe too fanciful.

@NOLALibrary so many branches down! If we’re in mid city, where do we get the books that are on hold? And I just tried to call the main branch which claims to be open but after holding for eight minutes, I got a recording that said it was closed.?

My weekend column is a long look at how the Nordic countries achieved economic success (Norway has higher per capita income than the US and also enjoys higher productivity), relative equality and some of the highest levels of happiness in the world. But I'm struck by how knee-jerk the reactions are: The American left is inclined to emulate Scandinavia and the right is inclined to savage it. Partly, I think, that's because both tend to confuse the Nordic model with socialism, when it's basically about free markets coupled with wage compression and very heavy investments in human capital and in empowering women in the labor force: Excellent child care, family leave benefits, flexible work, education, etc. But the model is under real strains from immigration and fiscal pressures, and it's rooted as much in norms as in laws. I don't think the US can adopt it wholesale, but I do think there are things we can learn from it -- especially the investments in young people. And when you see a model that generates such economic success and individual happiness, it's crazy to dismiss or fear it. Here's a gift link to my column: nytimes.com/2026/07/04/opi…

I’ll criticize him when it’s warranted but credit where it’s due. He’s got Obama’s oratory skills but doesn’t speak only in glittering generalities and has actually delivered meaningful change that has materially improved lives. And he terrifies the fascists. Keep it up.

JUST IN: NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani used America’s 250th anniversary to sharply criticize the country, accusing the U.S. of allowing children to go hungry while billionaires and “oligarchs” gain more power. He said America’s wealth was built by working people with “calloused, dirt-streaked hands" while accusing the country of allowing the wealth built by workers to be concentrated in “the soft hands of a precious few.”

So ask yourself this question. Mamdani is not just a phenomenon of a political talent but he has learnt from Obama that patriotism is the life blood of leadership. As is joy and hope. Any National Dem could have chosen today to make a speech to the nation. Where are Jeffries or Schumer? Newsom, Shaprio, Pritzker, Ossoff et al. Nature abhors a vacuum and the mayor of NYC has taken the leadership of the opposition to the administration and will hold it until someone else does so. He is using his legal inability to run for the highest office as an advantage to be the national voice of the party through influence rather than ambition. He’s exceptionally good at it.

Amazing to see Mark Ingram going into the Saints Hall of Fame just a couple of days after his fellow 2011 NFL Draft classmate, Cam Jordan, sign on for a 16th season. Pretty impressive 1-2 punch for the Saints in that 2011 first round.

Big news.
NAACP@NAACP

The NAACP is taking a stand. Today, we launch the #OutofBounds campaign, a national call to action for Black athletes, families, fans, and allies. In response to states erasing Black voting representation after the Supreme Court’s Louisiana v. Callais decision, we are demanding accountability. "Out of Bounds is our answer: we are naming the contradiction, and we are calling on Black athletes, families, fans, and consumers to act on it. The same power that built these programs can be redirected." —NAACP President and CEO @DerrickNAACP This is about more than sports. It’s about justice.
