@Quinlan5Mick @Independent_ie Yes we all remember them and the shimmy shakes. All medication has risk but I’d rather not develop cervical cancer and die… just my outlook.

A bill has passed in the UK that will ban anyone born after 2008 from ever being able to buy tobacco. Do you think a generational smoking ban should be considered in Ireland? Vote below: jrnl.ie/7019929

@Irlheff @thejournal_ie We already limit a lot of things based on age. The voting age is codified in the Constitution but if you’re saying this would be unconstitutional then so is restricting people from driving, drinking, stopping a 16yo from seeing a movie rated 18

@thejournal_ie It would probably be unconstitutional as it would discriminate against people on the basis of age

@thejournal_ie No. Either a full ban or no ban. Generational bans are highly discriminatory and should be unconstitutional.

@devane_fran @brianmlucey @irish_lassie27 Same question. let’s say u are the leader of the your own Party. Your party supports X and you’ve nominated Ms Smith. Then independent Y comes looking for the nomination. They are ur political opposite and don’t align with your party. Why would u then nominate them?

@annettecaff @brianmlucey @irish_lassie27 Because as the government in place, you are meant be run elections fairly and give all candidates a fair crack whether you agree with their politics or not. You are meant to allow the people to decide who their president will be from a full field, not a group of insiders.

Yes he won't be remembered for 40 years as a politician and as attorney General and as irregular media commentator and as the leader of a political party..... Hell be remembered for not giving the knock to somebody who would get 10% on a good day. Cop on with yourself
Carvill John@JohnJCarvill

After a long career in politics, the only thing that @SenatorMcDowell will be remembered for is blocking Maria Steen and denying the public the right to decide if she would be our President. I hope he’s happy now!

@irish_lassie27 @devane_fran @brianmlucey If the intention was to allow any1 to run then the Constitution wouldn’t put in barriers. If he was on the ballot a not small number of voters would pick an mma fighter. There had to be a balance between democratic will & constitutional ability. Any1 can be a TD Cllr MEP Senator

@annettecaff @devane_fran @brianmlucey Because the presidential election should be based on who the people want and not who the government decide who is allowed run That's dangerous thinking.

@devane_fran @brianmlucey @irish_lassie27 The Constitution clearly outlines the process for nominating a candidate for President. Why would u nominate someone u are ideologically opposed to just to give them a chance. If there was more right leaning electors she’d have been nominated. Their wasn’t as they weren’t elected

@brianmlucey @irish_lassie27 Regardless of whether or not she should have started her run earlier, she should have been allowed onto that ticket. It is clear to us with eyes to see that the establishment did not let her on the ticket because their globo/eu bosses didn't want an uncontrolled president.

@NoAIControl @RedDave14 @0KFW0 For god sake it’s been the same way since 1936. If you don’t know that a: the Council of State exists, is b: a literal constitutional body and c: who’s on it then maybe don’t complain and educate yourself on the topic before whinging about it.

If the Social Democrats want to talk about standards of debate, they might have thought to let me know before they let journalists know that they'd gone to the teacher. We didn't shout over female TDs. We shouted over Ministers. But I congratulate the Social Democrats on being able to tell the difference - I had genuinely thought they didn't know what a woman was. It is a bold new strategy which sees an opposition party filing a formal complaint because government Ministers were held to account. Not even their own Ministers. Someone else's. The Social Democrats remain the only party in Leinster House who would remind the teacher she forgot to assign homework. #fuelprotest #ireland

This time last year, the Supreme Court in Britain unanimously ruled that 'woman' refers to biological sex, not acquired gender. Little or nothing has been done to implement that ruling. In Ireland, Aontú is the only party that can say a woman is a female adult.

@winser53 @Toibin1 Ok… and? The Supreme Court of the United Kingdom can decide what it likes. Ireland is a separate and independent country and not bound by its rulings. I’d have thought Aontu and the ilk would know that…

@TheLedge1916 @Toibin1 Except in the main cases where this doesn’t happen. Despite the vocal anon, troll and bot accounts on social media, Ireland has firmly ensconced LGBTQ+ into law. Obviously more to be done and the risk of democratic backsliding.

@OConnorAston @thejournal_ie They are appointed by the heads of state/government of the member states. Similar to our own cabinet. Indirect democracy. It wouldn’t not be practical to elect the commission, the risk being they may not elect someone with qualifications in their portfolio.
