The Women of Wessex are sending these postcards to as many MPs as possible — and especially, as many as we can to Bridget Phillipson, to point out it is over a year since the Supreme Court ruling but we are still waiting for the updated EHRC Code to be laid before Parliament. We borrowed the wording from @SexMattersOrg (well, why improve on perfection?) and hope they don’t mind. Women have rights — votes too — and we are tired of waiting.

My position hasn't changed in the slightest. What you, and many other men, fail to grasp, possibly because you're so used to women coddling men's feelings you see it as the natural order of things, is that while a trans-identified man is absolutely and rightly free to dress and refer to himself however he likes in our society, that doesn't give him rights over women's beliefs and speech. I don't believe a man literally becomes a woman when he identifies as one, and as I have freedom of speech, I have the right to call him a man. The verifiable truth of sex forms the legal basis for women's rights and for safeguarding. Nothing reveals your inability to grasp this issue, or your fundamental sexism, more than the fact that you, a man, are assuming the right to dictate to women how they should speak about men.

I make no apologies for reposting this on the anniversary of For Women Scotland’s historic achievement, securing a landmark ruling in the Supreme Court. For twelve months, this government has dithered, delayed, and — we now learn — tried to temper the “tone” of the EHRC’s updated Code of Practice. It will NOT change the law, a law broken on almost a daily basis. #NoMoreExcuses #SupremeCourtRuling #WomenWontWheesht

This is not the Woman of the Day post. No one meets the criteria. This is the Woman of the Year post because three women do - For Women Scotland’s Trina Budge, Marion Calder, and Susan Smith who said in 2019: "If we cannot see sex, then we cannot see sexism, we cannot define sexuality, and it is the most vulnerable women who will suffer from this." They first met online in 2018 via that hotbed of radicalism, Mumsnet, and then in real life, little knowing that the next seven years would be dedicated to setting up For Women Scotland, spending countless hours learning the complexities of the law, mastering the skill of writing policy documents, lobbying politicians and the United Nations. They were labelled bigots, transphobes, fascists, Nazis, anti-abortionists, far right, Holocaust-deniers - all because they held the view that there are only two sexes and that human beings cannot change sex. It took For Women Scotland six years and the legal equivalent of Snakes and Ladders in which it lost a judicial review but won on appeal, and lost a second judicial review and a second appeal, to reach the Supreme Court on 26 November 2024 for a two-day hearing with unbelievably high stakes for every woman and every girl in Great Britain. I do not underestimate for one moment the pressure this placed on Trina, Marion and Susan: the cost to them financially and personally, the worry, the sleepless nights, the huge chunk it took out of their lives and the lives of their families, but I will be forever grateful that they never hesitated, never quailed, that they stood firm. One day when historians examine this period of history and write of countries captured by the frankly absurd belief that men could become women, could even be lesbians, and that there are 93 genders, the day when academics theorise on why madness arrives in crowds but sanity returns one person at a time, they will speak of the three women who took on the Scottish government and legal system, restored sanity to the UK and won. On 16 April 2025, Trina Budge, Marion Calder, and Susan Smith secured this glorious legal victory for For Women Scotland and for all of us: "The unanimous decision of this court is that the terms woman and sex in the Equality Act 2010 refer to a biological woman and biological sex.” Lord Hodge, Supreme Court Brava, For Women Scotland! 💚🤍💜 Photo credit: @Anna_Moffat

They tell you it's "compassionate" to affirm a child's gender confusion. But here's what they don't say: 1. Gender dysphoria has no empirical diagnostic test beyond self-declaration. There's no blood work, no brain scan, no objective measure—just feelings. 2. The same symptoms overlap heavily with autism, ADHD, trauma, and other conditions that get ignored once "trans" is claimed. 3. Kids are concrete thinkers. Tell them they might be "born in the wrong body" and watch how fast that suggestion becomes their entire identity. 4. Social transition isn't neutral. It's an active intervention that makes persistence MORE likely, not less. 5. The regret rate is climbing fast, but detransitioners are being silenced because their stories threaten the narrative. So when they say "affirm or they'll die," remember: They're not protecting children. They're programming them. And the real compassion? Helping kids accept their bodies instead of teaching them to hate what they were born with.

There is no Woman of the Day today. Instead, I’d like to point out that purdah doesn’t apply to us. For the next three weeks, I’m putting a sign in my front window making it clear I will not vote for any Council election candidate who won’t ensure compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling if elected. I’m sending postcards to @bridgetphillipsonmp, making it clear procrastination is not doing her any favours. I’ve used @SexMatters’ excellent template to email my MP — yes, the one who thinks women should just work a little harder at being kinder to the Most Oppressed — but I will write again about how unimpressed I am with delays and excuses. They are meant to be our elected representatives. They are meant to uphold the law. Time for them to locate their spines and stand up for women and children. I’m tired of waiting. Aren’t you? #NoMoreExcuses #SupremeCourtRuling #WomenWontWheesht sex-matters.org/take-action/wr…

It’s strange this isn’t taking off in Britain- it was a huge issue in Ireland. We won the referendum on it, with the largest ever majority in the history of the state, and the scale of the government defeat showed that they had lost the dressing room. The Taoiseach @LeoVaradkar announced his resignation 2 weeks later

NEW: Updated EHRC code to be published in May @bphillipsonMP has made a statement saying that she intends to lay the updated draft of the @EHRC’s code of  practice before Parliament “as soon as practicable” after the local and devolved administration elections. Then after 40 days, if neither house passes a resolution disapproving the draft, it will come into force. The EHRC has admitted that it amended the guidance after the government provided it with “a narrow set of comments” on its previous draft. Neither the minister nor the independent regulator is mandated to engage in this sort of delay and negotiation whereby the independent regulator edits its guidance to meet the preferences of the government. Section 14(7) of the Equality Act 2006 says that before issuing a code the EHRC shall submit a draft to the Secretary of State, who shall either approve the draft and lay a copy before Parliament or give the EHRC written reasons why she does not approve it. The legal framework does not envisage this as a back-and-forth process of backroom negotiations between the government and the EHRC. It is concerning that in her statement the Minister for Women and Equalities continues to focus on specialist service providers such as hospitals and women’s refuges and has still not made clear that ALL employers and service providers that offer single-sex or separate-sex facilities do so under the Equality Act, which recognises that men who have the protected characteristic of gender reassignment remain men, and do not have the right to access facilities provided for women and girls. Delaying laying the guidance till after local council and devolved administration elections is more unjustified procrastination. The government has patted itself on the back, saying: “We are getting it right, showing leadership by implementing the clarity the Supreme Court ruling delivers.” Yet government departments up and down the country are still operating with unlawful policies that the previous head of the civil service refused to withdraw.
