The fact that the unhinged U.S. president is getting more unhinged is depressing. But Americans should still be grateful for the fact that you can say so without fear, and you need to fight to preserve that freedom, as I told @jaynordlinger.

Thanks to @ChinaFile for doing the interview with me. One dilemma many of us CCP critics are grappling with these days is how to keep our criticism of the CCP from being weaponized by the wrong people for their own agenda.

In this piece, I share lessons for Americans who are currently struggling with whether to speak out in protest of Trump. I argue that while acting on one’s moral convictions can be risky, it can also feel profoundly good. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…

Hong Kong will hold elections for its Legislative Council on December 7, without a single pro-democracy candidate. The Chinese government is too fearful to allow a real election because it would show widespread disdain for the Chinese Communist Party. hrw.org/news/2025/12/0…

Folks, the US does NOT have a national security strategy. That report does not matter. The actual strategy is whatever Trump says depending on whoever he last met and what he ate last night. (cartoon by @badiucao)

The Hong Kong government should set up an independent inquiry instead of arresting people who ask hard questions. This tragedy can’t be reversed but the authorities can avoid compounding it by holding those responsible to account and adequately compensating the victims.

Today marks International Women Human Rights Defenders Day. For five & a half years in this mandate I've seen how they advocate tirelessly for the rights of others, building towards justice, community & the realisation of human rights around the world. I think of the WHRDs detained, those attacked, disappeared & killed, including trans WHRDs & WHRDs living under occupation. We have to keep condemning those attacks & never give up on the possibility of a better future for all. I send my full solidarity to all the WHRDs around the world. #WHRDDay

The photos of the Hong Kong fire are heartbreaking. What makes it even worse is knowing that the lack of press freedom and the absence of democratically elected leaders will only hinder a real investigation and meaningful accountability. 香港平安!香港加油!

Major victory: Chinese tomato exports to Italy collapse, following our research & BBC investigation into tomato-linked Uyghur forced labor. Official 2025 customs data confirms the collapse. Over 2/3 of China’s tomato exports are linked to Xinjiang.

Amnesty International

Amnesty International is concerned by reports that Chinese authorities have ordered the removal of gay dating apps from online platforms. No one should be discriminated against for who they are, who they love, or where they find love. This may reflect a broader pattern in China of erasing and stigmatizing the LGBTQI community and placing unacceptable limits on freedom of expression.
