“They have certainly disbelieved who say, ‘Indeed, Allāh is the third of three.’ Yet there is no deity except one God.”
Not takfiring the mushrikīn—whilst Allāh himself attributed disbelief to them—is denial of the words of Allāh.

The best book on the Khawārij is the book The Defectors: An Excavation of the Concept of the Khawārij between History and Reality by Sh ʿAbd Allāh al-ʿUjayrī. It argues that, contrary to the opinion of many contemporary scholars, the aṣl of the Khawārij is not making takfīr over major sins. If we take a look at all the sects that were historically labelled Khawārij, we find that they had two main uṣūl: making takfīr of Muslims according to principles that are considered invalid by Ahl as-Sunnah and permitting their blood over it and going out to kill them over it.
The author mentioned that some people might object and say that the ʾIbāḍiyyah are labelled Khawārij despite their lack of fighting. However, this objection is false because the ʾIbāḍiyyah still align with those who made takfīr of the Ṣaḥābah and killed them over it without right, which also makes them Khawārij.
