The only possibility is that they stored the hash of the upcased password.
So: s = hash(toupper(password))
If they had stored the plaintext password, they wouldn't be in this situation.
But why don't they simply do the same thing - upcase whatever you enter, hash, and check? It would make passwords case insensitive, just as they describe.

It's funny to me what experiences cause people to abandon a brand
Ten years ago, I was taking my kids to the beach. I stopped by Jersey Mike's to grab some food for the fam. They took my order but neglected to mention that they had just taken a 20 sandwich order from the guy in front of me.
I had already paid. I waited for my food. I checked on my kids (still in the van). I waited. I asked how long. They said "almost". It was not almost. It took 40 minutes. My kids were crying. The entire trip was ruined.
I have not been back to Jersey Mike's. I will never go back

Because she jokingly typed the word "shoot" in a private snap to a friend, Snapchat flagged her account and sent the message directly to the FBI. The FBI then had a local sheriff's Deputy show up at her school. Well, here is what eventually happened. She was physically pulled out of her elementary school and taken straight to the Tazewell County Jail, where she was officially booked for disorderly conduct. After interrogating her, the deputies actually admitted on the record that she made the comment purely out of "exasperation." They confirmed she had absolutely zero intent to harm anyone and was never a threat to the school. But even though the cops admitted she wasn't a danger and no formal charges were ever filed, her career still took a massive hit. The school district superintendent sent a letter to parents terminating her entirely, stating she would not be allowed to return to finish her assignment.
