Afghan woman, 33, reveals hell under the Taliban: tortured in prison and forced to watch her 14-year-old sister married off to a man in his fifties
Shokria, who worked in Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defense and women’s empowerment programmes, was arrested 40 days after the Taliban retook Kabul in 2021.
She was held in an unofficial Kabul detention centre, accused of “betraying Islam” for working with foreigners, and subjected to beatings that left her with shattered kneecaps and a concussion.
Her father, a former military officer, had previously been publicly whipped and humiliated during the Taliban’s first regime.
Shokria was also forced to witness her 14-year-old sister being dressed as a bride and married to a man more than three times her age.
She has now fled to Pakistan and is awaiting asylum, describing Afghanistan as “a prison for women that is worse than hellfire”.
