The High Court has declared SBM Bank’s attempt to auction a widow’s home illegal, finding the mortgage they relied on was void, defective, and fundamentally unreliable. The Court held that the charge could not stand in law. The bank claimed the deceased had taken loans of about KShs 11.15 million (KShs 9.15M overdraft and KShs 2M term loan), later restructured to around KShs 14.6 million, all allegedly secured using the matrimonial home. But the land was jointly owned, and the Court found the charge lacked valid spousal consent. The widow denied signing any documents and the bank failed to prove otherwise, even relying on a “mortgage” that referenced laws not yet in force. And it gets worse. A bank official allegedly cornered the widow in an ICU while her husband was critically ill and pressured her to sign a letter admitting the debt under threat of losing her home. The Court called this unconscionable, threw out the letter, and stopped the sale entirely exposing a disturbing mix of coercion, weak documentation, and reckless banking conduct.

💯 More often than not, the advocates are reduced to obscurity. And at best, to footnotes.Despite the hard work and spirited fight they put up. This is especially so for young, up and coming advocates. @Kenyajudiciary

Humble request to our esteemed JO's: when delivering judgments, especially well-reasoned ones, kindly mention names of counsel who appeared, instead of referring only to their respective parties. This recognizes professional contribution & enriches judicial record @Kenyajudiciary

@Artheamish This thesis is a nightmare and yeah, it’s crushing you but every sentence you force out is proof you’re still in the fight. Remember, burning out now won’t finish it faster so sneak in breaks like your life depends on it because it kind of does.

Again, thank you @PoliceUg, working with joint intelligence units for tracking down and arresting the notorious boda boda rider who, with others, was filmed hitting Sydney and causing his death. Apparently, he is detained at Kira Road Police. Now, we demand a speedy trial of the suspects, similar to a public mobile court hearing that tried the murderer of the daycare toddlers in Ggaba. This should be another landmark case in the fight against mob justice.

Let a mobile court session also be convened in Bukoto for the trial of the persons accused of killing Gongodyo, and let the proceedings be televised live so that the public and Boda Bodas can follow the process and witness justice being administered transparently

Can Bad Lawyering Defeat a Constitutional Right? An Interesting Case of Tuyiramye Edward v Uganda and Mandatory Bail in Uganda. Justice Ssemogerere observed that pursuing an application while disregarding express statutory provisions that confer a more favourable entitlement to bail is prejudicial to the applicant's rights. In reaching this conclusion, the learned Judge relied on Valentino Baburuhe v Uganda, Criminal Miscellaneous Application No. 2 of 2025, [2025] UGHC 271 (13 May 2025). The Court further emphasized that where an applicant is legally entitled to mandatory bail, it is improper to seek discretionary bail instead. However, the Court clarified that it cannot amend or reformulate the grounds set out in a Notice of Motion in order to convert an application for discretionary bail into one for mandatory bail. @SueNsibirwa @rkabushenga, In December 2022, I wrote about Uganda's growing online blackmail problem. Left unchecked it is growing into a distinct industry of "abavumi" (insultors) People without any moral or social or legal restraint just literally take the license to say and publish the wildest and vilest things they can invent about another person. Reputations are so difficult to build and yet by one push on even the cheapest smartphone, they can get unjustifibaly soiled. Surely that is not what freeedom of speech is about. As more of our lives move online, the online environment must be safe and healthy. #saynotoonlineblackmail

I was a church girl, fire spitting, demon chasing and from a strong Christian family,so getting pregnant out of wedlock was not part of the plan, that is why I disappeared, changed phone numbers, moved to South Western Uganda (Kihiihi) and stayed there till time for giving birth and I came back to Kampala, gave birth with the support of new friends I made during that time. I only went home after my baby's first birthday and everyone was shocked that "girl" had a child, so no I didn't tell my parents I was pregnant, I just showed up with a child who looks like me.
