বাংলার শাড়ি শুধু একটি পোশাক নয়, এটি এ অঞ্চলের সমৃদ্ধ সংস্কৃতি ও শৈল্পিক ঐতিহ্যের ধারক। বাংলার উষ্ণ ও আর্দ্র আবহাওয়ার উপযোগী হালকা সুতির কাপড় থেকে শুরু করে রাজকীয় সিল্ক, সবই বাংলার শাড়ির ভাণ্ডারে রয়েছে। ভারতের অন্যান্য প্রান্তের শাড়ির তুলনায় বাংলার শাড়ির বুননশৈলী, নকশা এবং পরার ধরন একে অনন্য করে তোলে। তাঁত: এটি বাংলার সবচেয়ে জনপ্রিয় সুতি শাড়ি। প্রচণ্ড গরমে আরামদায়ক এই শাড়ি অত্যন্ত হালকা ও উন্নত বুননের জন্য পরিচিত। ফরাসডাঙ্গা, শান্তিপুর ও ধনেখালির তাঁত সারা ভারতে সমাদৃত। জামদানি: ঢাকাই জামদানি বা নকশি জামদানি তার সূক্ষ্ম কারুকাজের জন্য বিশ্ববিখ্যাত। এটি ইউনেস্কো কর্তৃক 'ইনট্যানজিবল কালচারাল হেরিটেজ' হিসেবে স্বীকৃত। এর নকশা সুতোর উপরে সুতো দিয়ে হাতে বোনা হয়, যা দেখতে এমব্রয়ডারির মতো মনে হলেও আসলে বুননের অংশ। বালুচরী: পশ্চিমবঙ্গের মুর্শিদাবাদ ও বিষ্ণুপুরে এই সিল্ক শাড়ি তৈরি হয়। এর আঁচলে রামায়ণ, মহাভারত বা বিভিন্ন ঐতিহাসিক পৌরাণিক কাহিনী সুতো দিয়ে ফুটিয়ে তোলা হয়, যা ভারতের অন্য কোনো শাড়িতে সচরাচর দেখা যায় না। গরদ ও কোরিয়াল: লাল পাড় সাদা বা অফ-হোয়াইট রঙের এই সিল্ক শাড়িগুলো অত্যন্ত পবিত্র বলে গণ্য করা হয়। বাঙালি মহিলারা পূজাপার্বণ বা বিয়ের অনুষ্ঠানে এই শাড়ি পরতে পছন্দ করেন। কাঁথা স্টিচ: সাধারণ শাড়ির ওপর হাতে করা নিখুঁত সুঁই-সুতোর কাজের মাধ্যমে এটি তৈরি হয়। শান্তিনিকেতন ও বোলপুর অঞ্চলে এর বিশেষ প্রচলন রয়েছে। মুর্শিদাবাদী সিল্ক: এটি অত্যন্ত নরম এবং ওজনে খুব হালকা সিল্কের শাড়ি, যা সারাদিন পরে থাকার জন্য আরামদায়ক। বাংলার শাড়ি শিল্পের প্রসার এবং তাঁতশিল্পীদের অবস্থার উন্নয়নে রাজ্য সরকার বেশ কিছু গুরুত্বপূর্ণ পদক্ষেপ নিয়েছে। এই উদ্যোগগুলো মূলত বিপণন, আর্থিক সহায়তা এবং ঐতিহ্য সংরক্ষণের ওপর ভিত্তি করে তৈরি। রাজ্য সরকার 'বাংলার শাড়ি' নামে একটি নির্দিষ্ট ব্র্যান্ড চালু করেছে। এর মাধ্যমে রাজ্যের বিভিন্ন প্রান্তের ঐতিহ্যবাহী শাড়ি যেমন, শান্তিপুরী, ধনেখালি, বালুচরী, জামদানি এবং কাঁথা স্টিচকে একই ছাতার তলায় আনা হয়েছে। কলকাতা-সহ বিভিন্ন জেলায় এই ব্র্যান্ডের বিশেষ শো-রুম এবং ফ্র্যাঞ্চাইজি খোলার উদ্যোগ নেওয়া হয়েছে যাতে সরাসরি তাঁতিদের থেকে পণ্য সংগ্রহ করে ক্রেতাদের কাছে পৌঁছে দেওয়া যায়। রাজ্য সরকারের অধীনস্থ সংস্থা 'তন্তুজা' তাঁতশিল্পীদের উৎপাদিত শাড়ি সরাসরি ন্যায্য মূল্যে সংগ্রহ করে। এটি মধ্যস্বত্বভোগীদের দৌরাত্ম্য কমিয়ে তাঁতিদের সরাসরি লাভের মুখ দেখতে সাহায্য করে। বিশেষ করে উৎসবের মরসুমে বা মন্দার সময় সরকার ভর্তুকি দিয়ে শিল্পীদের থেকে শাড়ি কেনে। তাঁতিদের জন্য 'West Bengal Handloom and Khadi Weavers Financial Benefit Scheme'-এর মতো প্রকল্প চালু করা হয়েছে। এর আওতায় তাঁতিদের ঋণ প্রদান, সুদে ভর্তুকি এবং কাঁচামাল কেনার জন্য আর্থিক সহায়তা দেওয়া হয়। এছাড়াও অনেক ক্ষেত্রে তাঁতশিল্পীদের জন্য বিমা ও বার্ধক্য ভাতার ব্যবস্থাও রাখা হয়েছে। বাংলার ঐতিহ্যবাহী শাড়িগুলোর মৌলিকত্ব বজায় রাখতে সরকার সেগুলোর জিআই (Geographical Indication) স্বীকৃতির জন্য কাজ করে। যেমন, শান্তিপুরী, ধনেখালি ও বালুচরী শাড়ি আগেই এই স্বীকৃতি পেয়েছে এবং সম্প্রতি টাঙ্গাইল শাড়ি (পশ্চিমবঙ্গ সংস্করণ)-কেও জিআই তকমা দেওয়া হয়েছে। এটি আন্তর্জাতিক বাজারে বাংলার শাড়ির স্বকীয়তা প্রমাণে সাহায্য করে। তাঁতিদের দক্ষতা বাড়াতে বিভিন্ন ক্লাস্টারে প্রশিক্ষণের ব্যবস্থা করা হয়। উন্নত মানের তাঁতকল (Jacquard machine) সরবরাহ এবং কর্মশালা তৈরির জন্য সরকার অনুদান প্রদান করে। নদীয়া ও পূর্ব বর্ধমানের মতো জেলাগুলোতে বিশেষ 'হ্যান্ডলুম হাব' তৈরির পরিকল্পনাও বাস্তবায়িত হচ্ছে। বাংলার শাড়ির বাজারের আনুমানিক মূল্য বছরে ১০,০০০ কোটি থেকে ১২,০০০ কোটি টাকার বেশি হতে পারে। বাংলার শাড়ি ব্যবসা শুধু স্থানীয় বাজারে নয়, বরং ই-কমার্স এবং রপ্তানির মাধ্যমে এখন বিশ্বজুড়ে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। ডিজিটাল প্ল্যাটফর্মে প্রিমিয়াম শাড়ির চাহিদা বাড়ায় এই টার্নওভার প্রতি বছর প্রায় ৬-৭% হারে বৃদ্ধি পাচ্ছে। লোভী বা অসাধু বহিরাগত ব্যবসায়ীদের প্রভাবে বাংলার ঐতিহ্যবাহী শাড়ি শিল্প ব্যাপক ক্ষতির সম্মুখীন হতে পারে। এর ফলে শুধু যে অর্থনৈতিক ক্ষতি হয় তা নয়, বরং দীর্ঘদিনের শিল্প সংস্কৃতি ও গুণমানও নষ্ট হয়ে যেতে পারে। বহিরাগত ব্যবসায়ীরা তাঁতিদের থেকে খুব কম দামে শাড়ি কিনে তা শহরে বা বিদেশে চড়া দামে বিক্রি করলে মূল কারিগররা তাদের পরিশ্রমের ন্যায্য মজুরি পাবেন না, যা তাদের পেশা ত্যাগে বাধ্য করতে পারে। বাংলার শাড়ি শিল্প কে বাঁচান বহিরাগত বর্গীদের ও অসাধু ব্যবসায়ীদের হাত থেকে।
