Dr Zahed Ur Rahman an Adviser to the Prime Minister @trahmanbnp of Bangladesh was subjected to treatment by Indian immigration authorities that was unwarranted and deeply discourteous. According to accounts of the incident which was confirmed from @ur_zahed himself, he was made to wait for nearly two hours at New Delhi airport without any clear explanation, despite travelling on a valid passport and visa. Bangladesh High Commissioner to India @hamidullah_riaz , accompanied by another diplomatic officer and a protocol official from the High Commission, had gone to the airport to receive Dr Zahed upon his arrival. After disembarking, he was escorted to the immigration area and submitted his passport for entry. What followed, however, was far from routine. After his passport was submitted, he was directed to a general waiting area and asked to wait — a wait that stretched to nearly two hours, with no explanation offered. Throughout this period, officials of the Bangladesh High Commission, including the High Commissioner himself, remained in active contact with @MEAIndia , working to resolve the situation. Eventually, Indian immigration authorities informed Dr Zahed that he could proceed and enter the country. By that point, however, he had made up his mind. He declined entry and, despite repeated requests from immigration officials, refused to leave the airport. Arrangements were subsequently made for him to return to Dhaka via Colombo. Making a visiting dignitary of state-ministerial rank who also happens to be an Adviser to the Prime Minister, wait for hours without explanation reflects poorly on the professionalism of the process from the part of Indian immigration authorities and has understandably generated anger in Bangladesh. Yet the incident also raises important questions that deserve clarification. When a person of Dr. Zahed's status—effectively holding the rank of a state minister—travels abroad, even on an ordinary passport, it is standard diplomatic practice for the relevant High Commission to notify the host country's foreign ministry in advance. Such communication is generally conveyed through a diplomatic note or formal letter outlining the visitor's status, purpose of visit and expected arrival details. Once such a notification reaches the Ministry of External Affairs, it is typically shared with the relevant agencies, including immigration and security authorities under the Ministry of Home Affairs. This ensures that officials at the port of entry are aware that a senior government representative is arriving and can facilitate the necessary protocol arrangements. This leads to a straightforward but important question. Did the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi formally notify the Indian Ministry of External Affairs about Dr. Zahed's visit before his arrival? If such a notification was sent and the incident still occurred, responsibility would rest squarely with the Indian side, and the treatment meted out to Dr Zahed would represent a serious diplomatic embarrassment. If, however, the required diplomatic communication was not issued, then the matter points to a significant lapse by the @bdhc_delhi itself. While that would not necessarily excuse the conduct of immigration officials, it would raise legitimate questions about whether proper diplomatic procedures were followed before the visit. For that reason, Bangladesh authorities should clarify the protocol arrangements that preceded the trip. The actions of Indian immigration have already come under scrutiny. Whether there was also an avoidable procedural failure on the Bangladeshi side remains a question that merits a clear answer.

In their latest statement on #Bangladesh, #pressfreedom org. the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) highlighted the need to break the vicious cycle of repression faced by #media workers and journalists whenever there is a new government. “Press freedom in Bangladesh has too often been treated as an opportunity for each new government to turn the law against journalists allegedly aligned with the previous administration,” said CPJ Asia-Pacific Program Coordinator @KunalMajumder. Prime Minister Tarique Rahman’s government pledged to be different. But 100 days in, meaningful progress remains limited. CPJ recommended the following ten actions for the #BNP Govt to restore press freedom in Bangladesh: First, ending the misuse of the criminal justice to target journalists. In contemporary Bangladesh, such abuse is most starkly demonstrated by the dozens of journalists detained and/or charged under the wholesale criminal cases arising out of the July-Aug 2024 protests; Second, stopping the Int’l Crimes Tribunal from being used against journalists. This is in reference to the proceedings brought against detained journalists Farzana Rupa and Mozammel Babu in relation to the alleged violence of 5 May 2013 regarding #HefazateIslam’s “Dhaka Siege” programme; Third, ending the smearing and vilification of journalists. Political actors, state-aligned media, and online trolls routinely label Bangladeshi journalists as “pro-India,” “anti-Islam,” “traitors,” or agents of the former government. Fourth, reforming the accreditation system and establishing safeguards against abusive litigation. After the fall of the #AwamiLeague Govt stepped down in 2024, the Press Information Department (PID) revoked the accreditation of 168 journalists, while the system has been used to punish critical editors. Fifth, protecting journalists and newsrooms from mob violence. During the December 2025 unrest, the offices of Bangladesh’s two largest newspapers, @ProthomAlo and @dailystarnews, were attacked and set on fire, with journalists temporarily trapped inside burning newsrooms. Elsewhere, individuals stormed the offices of Somoy TV and demanded the dismissal of journalists. In 2025, CPJ documented at least 10 incidents of #violence and #harassment against reporters covering political events, most of them carried out by members or affiliates of the #BNP and its student wing, #ChhatraDal.  The other suggestions include: Ensuring accountability for crimes against journalists, regardless of politics; replacing the Cyber Protection Act, 2026 and dismissing politically motivated cybercrime cases; reforming the Anti-Terrorism Act, 2009 to end its use against journalists; withdrawing the draft media regulatory ordinances and implementing the Media Reform Commission’s recommendations; and repealing or amending the legacy laws and surveillance frameworks used to silence journalists. ড. ইউনুস আসলেই কি আমেরিকার সাথে চুক্তি করে দেশ বিক্রি করে দিয়েছিলেন? এই বিশাল প্রপাগাণ্ডা আওয়ামী লীগ বিএনপি উভয়েই চালিয়েছে। আসুন, পুরো ঘটনা ধাপে ধাপে ভেঙে দেখা যাক। ২০২৫ সালে ট্রাম্প প্রশাসন বাংলাদেশি পণ্যের ওপর ৩৭% ট্যারিফ আরোপ করে বসে। এটা ছিল অর্থনীতির মেরুদণ্ড ভেঙে দেওয়ার শামিল। কারণ বাংলাদেশের তৈরি পোশাক খাত একাই মোট রপ্তানি আয়ের ৮০% এর বেশি যোগান দেয়, আর জিডিপির প্রায় ১০% আসে এই খাত থেকে। সবচেয়ে বড় ক্রেতা এককভাবেই যুক্তরাষ্ট্র। ২০২৪ সালে শুধু আমেরিকাতেই বাংলাদেশ ৭.৩৪ বিলিয়ন ডলারের পোশাক রপ্তানি করেছিল। এই চুক্তির জবাবেই ২০২৬ সালের ৯ ফেব্রুয়ারি ড. ইউনূসের সরকার পারস্পরিক বাণিজ্য চুক্তি করে। এর মাধ্যমে সেই শুল্ক কমিয়ে ১৯% করা হয়। এখানেই প্রথম প্রপাগান্ডার শুরু। অনেকেই বলে "মাত্র ১% কমানো হয়েছে"। আসলে ৩৭% থেকে কমিয়ে ২০%, তারপর ১৯% করা হয়েছে। অর্থাৎ ১৮% কমানো হয়েছে, ১% না। আর বড় ব্যাপার হলো চুক্তিতে পোশাক খাতের জন্য একটা বিশেষ শর্ত দেওয়া আছে। যদি যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে তুলা আমদানি করে পোশাক বানানো হয়, তাহলে সেই পোশাক আমেরিকায় ঢুকবে কোনো ট্যারিফ ছাড়াই। "জিরো ট্যারিফ" এটাই পুরো চুক্তির সবচেয়ে বড় প্রাপ্তি। আর বাংলাদেশ কিন্তু তুলা আমদানি করে ভারত থেকে, ভারতের মিডিয়ায় তাদের কৃষকদের জন্যে হাহাকার তৈরী হয়। বাংলাদেশের এই জিরো ট্যারিফ পাওয়ায় ইন্ডিয়ান গদি মিডিয়া থেকে শুরু করে, গদি ইউটিউবার সবাই অবাক হয়ে যায়। গদি আইটিসেলের সবচেয়ে পপুলার চ্যানেল ক্যারিয়ার ২৪৭ ও ভিডিও বানায়। এছাড়াও দেশভক্তের আকাশ ব্যানার্জি থেকে শুরু করে, রাবিশ কুমার, আশোক কুমার পান্ডে, আবিশার শার্মা সহ প্রায় সব বড় বড় জার্নালিস্ট এই জিরো ট্যারিফকে বাংলাদেশের বিজয় হিসাবে উল্লেখ্য করে। এখন সমালোচকেরা বলে, "১% শুল্ক কমানোর বিনিময়ে ৬,৭১০টি মার্কিন পণ্যে শুল্ক ছাড় দেওয়া কেন?" এটা শুনলেই যেকারো মনে সন্দেহ তৈরী হওয়ার কথা। কিন্তু খতিয়ে দেখলে বাস্তবতা অন্যরকম। ২০২৫ সালে বাংলাদেশ ওই ৬,৭১০ পণ্যের তালিকা থেকে মাত্র ২,০১৬টি পণ্য আমদানি করেছিল, যার মোট মূল্য ছিল মাত্র ৬.৫ কোটি ডলার। অন্য দিকে, যে ১,৬৩৮টি বাংলাদেশি পণ্যে যুক্তরাষ্ট্র সুবিধা দেবে, তা থেকেও ২০২৫ সালে মাত্র ১৪টি পণ্য রপ্তানি হয়েছিল, যার মূল্য মাত্র ৬ লাখ ৭০ হাজার ডলার। অর্থাৎ দুই পক্ষেরই এই তালিকার সিংহভাগ প্রতীকী, বাস্তবে যার বাণিজ্যিক গুরুত্ব এখনো খুবই কম। আসল চুক্তিটাই ছিলো পোশাক খাতের ট্যারিফ থেকে বাঁচা। এছাড়াও বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতি ও বাজারকে ডাইভার্সিফাই করা দরকার বলে আমি মনে করি। শুধু মাত্র ভারতের উপর থেকে নির্ভরশীলতা কমানো খুবই জরুরী। চুক্তির আরেক বড় অংশ ছিল বোয়িং উড়োজাহাজ কেনা। বিমান বাংলাদেশ এয়ারলাইন্স ১৪টি বোয়িং কেনার প্রতিশ্রুতি দেয়, যার মূল্য ৩.৭ বিলিয়ন ডলার। অনেকে বলেন, "এত টাকা দিয়ে এয়ারবাস বেশি কেনা যেত"। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ বিমানের পুরো বহরই আগে থেকেই বোয়িং-নির্ভর। হুট করে ভিন্ন কোম্পানির এয়ারবাস ঢুকিয়ে দিলে রক্ষণাবেক্ষণ, যন্ত্রাংশ, প্রশিক্ষণ—সব মিলিয়ে খরচ বেড়ে যেত। এছাড়াও ২০২৩ সালে শেখ হাসিনার সরকারও এয়ারবাস A350 কেনার প্রস্তাব 'আর্থিকভাবে লাভজনক নয়' বলে প্রত্যাখ্যান করেছিল। তার মানে বোয়িং কেনার সিদ্ধান্তটা হুট করে নেওয়া নয়, বরং বাস্তবতা মেনেই নেওয়া। আর একি দামে আসলে খুব বেশি এয়ারবাস বিমানও কেনা যেত না, হাইয়েস্ট একটা বিমান বেশি কেনা যেত। এটা কোন ভাবেই যৌক্তিক ছিলো না যে, বোয়িং ছেড়ে বাংলাদেশ এয়ারলাইনসে এয়ারবাস বিমান ডুকানো। কৃষি ও জ্বালানি খাতে সমালোচকদের আরেকটা প্রশ্ন, "আমদানির অঙ্গীকার কেন?" নিজেদের গার্মেন্টস অর্থনীতির মেরুদণ্ড বাঁচাতে গেলে কিছু ছাড় তো দিতেই হতো। ট্রাম্প কেন বিনা কারণে শুল্ক কমাবে? বরং আমরা কৃষিপণ্যে ভারতের ওপর নির্ভরশীল, সেখানে আমেরিকা থেকে আমদানি করলে নির্ভরতার উৎস বৈচিত্র্যময় হবে। জ্বালানির ক্ষেত্রেও মধ্যপ্রাচ্যের টানাপোড়েনের বাজারে একটি বাড়তি সরবরাহ পথ পাওয়া খারাপ কিছু নয়। এবার আসি রাজনৈতিক প্রপাগাণ্ডায়। আওয়ামী লীগ তো বরাবরই ড. ইউনূস-বিরোধী। শেখ হাসিনার পতনের জন্য নিজেদের জুলুমকে দায়ী না করে তারা ড. ইউনূসকেই 'ষড়যন্ত্রের নায়ক' বানাতে চায়। যদিও ড. ইউনুসকে উড়িয়ে এনে জুড়িয়ে বসানো হয়েছিলো, কারণ তখন তিনি ছাড়া ভারতের প্রপাগাণ্ডা ও ইন্টারন্যাশনাল চাপ মোকাবেলা করার মত কোন যোগ্য ব্যাক্তি বাংলাদেশে ছিলো না। অন্যদিকে বিএনপি জানে, ড. ইউনূসকে যত বেশি ডিফেইম করা যাবে, তাদের ভবিষ্যত নেতার জন্য বড় চ্যালেঞ্জ ততটাই কমে যাবে। তাই তাকে বিতর্কিত করতে পারলে রাজনৈতিক ময়দানে তাদের কাজ সহজ হবে। এই দুই দলের মিলিত রাজনৈতিক স্বার্থেই চুক্তিটা দেশে সমালোচিত হচ্ছে, অথচ বাস্তবতাটা পুরো ভিন্ন। ভারতও কিন্তু একই সময়ে যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের চাপে প্রায় একই পথে হেঁটেছে। তাদের শুল্ক ৫০% থেকে কমিয়ে ১৮% করা হয়েছে, বিনিময়ে ৫০০ বিলিয়ন ডলারের পণ্য কেনার প্রতিশ্রুতি দিতে হয়েছে। তার মানে বাংলাদেশ এককভাবে টার্গেট নয়, পুরো বিশ্বই তখন চাপের মুখে ছাড় দিচ্ছিল। এছাড়াও ভারত তো তাদের দীর্ঘদিনের মিত্র রাশিয়ার জ্বালানী আমদানি বন্ধ করে দেয়। রাশিয়ার সাথে সম্পর্ক খারাপ করে। রাশিয়া ভারতকে কম দামে ক্রুড অয়েল দিচ্ছিলো, পরবর্তীতে যখন সম্পর্ক খারাপ হয়, আর আমেরিকা ইরানের সাথে যুদ্ধ শুরু করে, এবং বৈশ্বিক এনার্জি সংকট তৈরী হয়, তখন সেটা দূর করতে আমেরিকা রাশিয়ার তেলের উপর থেকে স্যাংশন তুলে নেয়, এরপর কিন্তু রাশিয়া আর ভারতকে কম দামে তেল দেয়নি। আমি ভারতের তুলনা দিচ্ছি কেন? কারণ বাংলাদেশের পোষাক খাতের মেইন কম্পিটিটর হচ্ছে ভারত। সব মিলিয়ে বলা যায়, চুক্তিটা ত্রুটিমুক্ত নয়, কিন্তু তা ছিল আপৎকালীন এক কৌশলী সিদ্ধান্ত। পরবর্তীতে আমেরিকান আদালত ট্রাম্পের এই ট্যারিফ-ট্যারিফ খেলা বন্ধ করে দেয়। কিন্তু বাংলাদেশ এই চুক্তি থেকে বের হতে পারবে না, এমন যুক্তি নিয়ে এসে ও দাঁড়াবে একদল লোক। বাংলাদেশ এই চুক্তি থেকে বের হতে না পারলে ও খুব বেশি ক্ষতির কারণ দেখছিনা আমি। বাংলাদেশের অর্থনীতিকে ডাইভার্সিফাই করা, ও বোয়িং কেনা খুব বেশি খারাপ চুক্তি ও না। আর এই প্রব্লেমটা শুধু বাংলাদেশের জন্যে না, বিশ্বের সব দেশের জন্যেই সমান। কারো হেডম থাকলে আমেরিকার সাথে চুক্তি ভঙ্গ করুক। যদিও এই চুক্তিতে বিএনপির ও মতামত নেয়া হয়েছিলো বলে প্রচার হয়েছে। রজার খলিল সাহেব তো এখন বিএনপির প্রসাশনেই আছেন। দলীয় রাজনীতির চশমা না পরে শুধু অর্থনৈতিক বাস্তবতায় দেখলে পরিষ্কার হয়, ড. ইউনূস সরকার দেশ বিক্রি করেনি, বরং দেশের প্রধান রপ্তানি খাতকে বাঁচানোর লড়াই করেছেন। সংগৃহীত

Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri was scheduled to travel to Nepal this week. India was still looking at Nepal from that shitty “ROTI BETI KA RISHTA” prism. So Misri wanted to meet the new PM of Nepal, Balen Shah. Balen refused to meet him, saying, “You are Foreign Secretary, I am PM. Why do you want to meet me? You should meet my Foreign Secretary instead.” India got very angry about this, and Misri cancelled his visit to Nepal. 👀
