@luke_phys "Evolutionary dynamics" by Martin Nowak goes over evolutionary games nicely. If you can frame your system as a game like this, you can determine if you will have a coexistence state (mixed strategy). Whether this coexistence has "stranger" behaviour is another question :P

@askermatthew Wondering if you have a nice reference for this? Wouldn’t it be convenient if we could, given the dynamics/rules, somehow have a recipe to determine if Active-Passive mixing results in stranger behaviour..

Consider a system with 2 extremes: 1) constituents are all active & 2) constituents are all passive. Now if I can determine X fraction of particles that are active, thus defining a spectrum between 1) and 2), when should I expect qualitatively new phenomena for 0<X<1? Or never?
