End of term and among my reflections is this — Ambedkar’s Annihilation of Caste is a great text to teach in 2026 America. Students see parallels and connections with their lives. And, separately, it gives them a meaty introduction to the intellectual life of 20th-century India.

Read the full story: A 23-year-old woman from the Kuki community - an Indigenous tribal community from Northeast India - has alleged years of confinement and abuse while working at a faculty residence linked to IIM Bangalore. According to her statement, her phone was taken away. Her movements were controlled. She could not freely contact her family. She alleged she was made to work from early morning until past midnight every day. She further alleged physical abuse, intimidation, starvation, and constant surveillance inside the residence. Even illness, she claimed, was dismissed as “drama.” According to reports, the woman eventually escaped after breaking a window and seeking help from neighbours nearby. Residents later helped her contact the police. A case has now been registered and an investigation is underway. But this story is bigger than one household. Across India, many women from tribal, Dalit, SC, OBC, migrant, and economically vulnerable communities leave their homes searching for work and survival in unfamiliar cities. Many become domestic workers, caregivers, cleaners, and live-in helpers far away from their families and support systems. Too often, the people doing the hardest labour remain invisible. It is a reminder of how exploitation can remain hidden behind closed doors - especially when workers are isolated from family, language, community, and protection.
