A whole lot of laws should be amended in this country....two term of 8 years or one term of 6years and you're done and out.... Allow me first to express my sincere appreciation to Your Majesty and to Her Majesty, The Queen for the warmth and generosity extended to me, my wife, Oluremi, and the Nigerian delegation. As the first Nigerian leader to speak here at Windsor Castle, which has served the British Crown for nearly a millennium, is particularly historic. Windsor has stood as a symbol of continuity, witnessing the steady evolution of institutions that have shaped governance, culture, and public life not only in Britain but far beyond these shores. Nigeria and the United Kingdom have shared more than just history; our two nations share a vision of progress and resilience. Today, we continue that journey, committed to building a future rooted in partnership, mutual respect, and common values. Standing here in Windsor Castle, one cannot help but reflect on Britain’s impact on modern democratic governance worldwide. The Magna Carta of 1215 laid the early foundations for the rule of law and the development of parliamentary democracy, establishing enduring ideals around liberty, accountable government, and civic responsibility. Great British thinkers and writers such as Thomas Hobbes, John Locke, and Edmund Burke helped to propagate those democratic ideals. Their influence continues to resonate to this day. The literary genius of William Shakespeare and other writers such as Charles Dickens, has enriched and shaped the English language, spoken by over 1.5 billion people worldwide. In Nigeria, elements of these traditions continue to inform the institutional foundations of our own republic. Our courts draw upon legal traditions rooted in English common law. Our parliamentary institutions reflect constitutional practices that evolved here over centuries. Our civil service structures have also drawn upon administrative models developed in Britain and adapted to Nigeria’s own national context. While institutions matter greatly, our people remain the strongest bridge between our two countries. The Nigerian community in the United Kingdom has become one of the most dynamic diaspora communities worldwide. Nigerians contribute enormously to the vitality of this nation. Within the National Health Service, Nigerian doctors and nurses play an indispensable role in delivering healthcare. Nigerian-trained doctors are among the largest groups of international medical professionals serving the NHS. In sport, rugby players such as Maro Itoje, footballers including Bukayo Saka and Eberechi Eze, and champion boxer Anthony Joshua, illustrate the remarkable human connection that links Nigeria and the United Kingdom. Our partnership is further strengthened through the Commonwealth of Nations, which connects 56 countries under Your Majesty’s leadership. As one of the largest nations within the Commonwealth, Nigeria looks forward to contributing constructively to the continued growth and vitality of this global community. Our West African region faces complex terrorism challenges with roots in the Sahel. Nigeria carries an enormous responsibility to help safeguard regional stability. I sincerely thank President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the President and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, for my ambassadorial posting. This is a man with a heart of gold, and as I have previously said, the President is a most Christlike individual, with the capacity to forgive and forbear. Nigeria could not have had a better leader for the present time and for the next five years, by the grace of God. Nigeria is rising under the present administration, as demonstrated by the hosting of the largest single tourist event in Africa in 2025, Detty December, which attracted 1.2 million tourists to Nigeria in December 2025 alone, without a single death, robbery, or domestic incident. A sign that, though we may have localised challenges, Nigeria is a safe and secure destination for your holiday and investments, as well as a politically stable nation, and the only country in Africa where five former Presidents and Heads of State dwell in peace within the country with the incumbent President. DSS Apprehends Mastermind of Deadly 2025 Ayetoro ECWA Church Attack Operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) have arrested Shafiu Usman, the alleged mastermind behind the deadly attack on ECWA Church in Ayetoro, Kogi State, where over 20 worshippers were kidnapped on December 14, 2025. Security sources disclosed that Usman was nabbed at a hideout in Gombe State, where he had been lying low. During interrogation, he confessed to orchestrating the Ayetoro church attack, as well as other kidnappings in Niger, Kwara, and Kogi States. Usman revealed that he collaborated with Ibrahim Dange Battijo, a notorious bandit operating across Niger, Kwara, Kogi, and Zamfara States. "Shafiu admitted to involvement in kidnapping, banditry, and cattle rustling. He said Ibrahim Battijo supplied him with arms and ammunition," the source quoted. "After the Kogi attack, Usman fled to Gombe, but DSS operatives trailed and arrested him." "This arrest underscores the DSS's ongoing achievements in tackling banditry and terrorism, including recent operations in Gombe State that neutralized arms trafficking networks, rescued kidnap victims, and dismantled cross-state syndicates" The suspect remains in DSS custody awaiting arraignment.

New Tax Reform: Nobody Will Debit Your Account — Taiwo Oyedele Assures Nigerians Taiwo Oyedele, chairman of the presidential committee on fiscal policy and tax reforms, has assured Nigerians that the new tax reforms will not result in automatic debits from bank accounts, regardless of transaction amounts or descriptions. Speaking on Channels Television’s end-of-year special on Tuesday, Oyedele said no tax authority has the capacity to monitor every individual, explaining that enforcement is usually targeted at high-income earners, not regular bank users. “Nobody will debit your account. Any amount of money you transfer, whether it is 1 billion, whether it is 1,000, it doesn’t matter how you describe it. Nobody will debit your bank account,” he said. Citing Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation data, he added, “You know that the NDIC said 98 percent of bank holders in Nigeria can’t boast of 500k in their bank account. Those are the people fighting.” Oyedele said misinformation had driven opposition to the reforms, noting that the team underestimated how public sentiment could be manipulated.  “I think something we underestimated in this reform. We said the current system is regressive, taxing the vulnerable more.  Let us make it progressive. We underestimated how these guys can manipulate the average person to fight the fights on their behalf. Even against their own interests, that was what played out and it is totally unbelievable.” He accused some high-earning content creators of spreading false narratives. “There are content creators who admitted they make up to $10,000 a month. They don’t want to pay tax. They say they are going to debit your bank account so you can help them fight the reform.” Oyedele explained that the reformed tax system is based on self-declaration, with taxpayers declaring income annually, while exempt individuals only need to declare their status.  He spoke as President Bola Tinubu confirmed that implementation of the new tax laws will proceed as scheduled, stressing that the reforms are not designed to increase taxes.

NEW TAX LAWS WILL COMMENCE ON JANUARY 1, 2026 AS PLANNED The new tax laws, including those that took effect on June 26, 2025, and the remaining acts scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026, will continue as planned. These reforms are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to build a fair, competitive, and robust fiscal foundation for our country. The tax laws are not designed to raise taxes, but rather to support a structural reset, drive harmonisation, and protect dignity while strengthening the social contract. I urge all stakeholders to support the implementation phase, which is now firmly in the delivery stage. Our administration is aware of the public discourse surrounding alleged changes to some provisions of the recently enacted tax laws. No substantial issue has been established that warrants a disruption of the reform process. Absolute trust is built over time through making the right decisions, not through premature, reactive measures. I emphasise our administration's unwavering commitment to due process and the integrity of enacted laws. The Presidency pledges to work with the National Assembly to ensure the swift resolution of any issue identified. I assure all Nigerians that the Federal Government will continue to act in the overriding public interest to ensure a tax system that supports prosperity and shared responsibility.
