@olson_dan I still remember the time a customer required us to use smart pointers for any and all updates we made to code in CryEngine which was more C-like than anything else. That was a tedious exercise in futility.

Some of the takes in this thread are of the confidently wrong variety but the interesting thing to me is that people always talk about shared_ptr as if it is a magic bullet for memory safety problems when the better abstraction is likely vector and slice/span.

Guidelines I follow to ship safe C++ (thread): 1. C constructs are a code smell. Replace raw pointers with smart pointers or references (no nulls!), replace C array with std::array (now it is safe to return). std::invoke, C++ casts, etc. Avoid preprocessor (#define and such)

I finally finished Neon Genesis Evangelion. I'm not sure I liked it. But it was very interesting. Definitely will spend some time on YouTube watching "explained" content lol.
