A Bengaluru techie lost ₹8.7 lakh to a bank fraud in 11 minutes because of Bank's data leak. He got it all back — because of one WhatsApp screenshot he almost didn't save. Here's what happened: Rohit K. got a call from "Bank Fraud Prevention desk" The caller already knew his last 4 digits, his branch, his registered email. Classic trust-building. He was told his card was "compromised" and to verify by sharing an OTP to "block" it. He shared it. ₹8.7L gone across 3 transactions in 11 minutes. Bank's first response: "Customer shared OTP, no liability." RBI's own 2017 circular says otherwise — if you report within 3 working days of an unauthorized transaction (not one you knowingly authorized, but one enabled by bank-side data leaks), your liability is ZERO. The catch: he had to prove the bank/its outsourced call centre leaked his data. He had one thing — a screenshot of the call log timestamp matching the "fraud alert" SMS, sent 40 seconds before the actual OTP request. Proof the fraud was pre-scripted using leaked account data, not phishing off a random guess. Filed with the Banking Ombudsman. Bank stonewalled for 45 days. Ombudsman ruled: full refund + ₹15,000 compensation for "deficiency in service" (the data leak itself was Bank's failure, per RBI norms). ₹8.85L back in his account. The lesson: screenshot everything, the moment it happens. Timestamps are your only weapon against "you authorized it." Save this. You won't remember the RBI 3-day rule when you're panicking on a call.
