I recently found out that the guy who introduced handwashing as an integral part of surgery prep learned it from midwives and before him everyone else had dismissed their lower rates of infant mortality as just a “women are naturally better at handling childbirth” thing
My daughter Annika is proudly autistic and 12 years old.
She drew this butterfly from a photo she took herself — every vein, every scale, rendered by hand on a tablet.
She signs everything she makes. Dates it. Like she already knows it matters.
She's turning 13 tomorrow. Please share this for her birthday. Let's make her day.
@emilykmay If a country has Pandas, they’re often “loaned,” as an international, diplomatic gesture between the two countries. The guest country still has to pay for them, often, but it’s often regarded as an important gauge of international cooperation, and goodwill
our local-ish zoo is the largest natural habitat zoo in the world and we just got an "Asia" section and I was so excited about pandas and it turns out there will be no pandas bc you have to pay china millions of dollars if you want pandas!! who knew!!!
A closer look at how I painted this 👀 🖌️
First I hung up an old storm lamp. This created the backdrop.
Then I encouraged swallows to nest inside it
... finally I painted this scene from their daily lives🪺🐦⬛

The Artemis II crew just spotted an unnamed lunar crater and asked to call it Carroll. Why?
They chose the name to honor Commander Reid Wiseman’s late wife, turning a moon mission into a beautiful tribute.
It's a powerful reminder that love can travel anywhere, even to the moon. ❤️

@lectersbian I loved Oscar Wilde’s works when I was in an Anglican boarding school, but a teacher discouraged me from reading it. I couldn’t figure out why until I learned he was “a homosexual,” so then I wanted to know what that was too. Still love his works.
It’s worth watching to the end.
I went to New York to see my Netflix billboard in Times Square. I’m shy and anxious and British and it was a thrilling and mortifying experience. Thank you Netflix. What a career high.
You can watch Late Bloomer on Netflix now or in the UK and Ireland, on Channel 4 on Demand.

MOSSY ANGELS Today, in this 1869 graveyard, in front of these mossy carvings, I am confident that there is such a thing as rebirth, that the living spring from the dead and that the souls of the dead are in existence #folkloresunday
Can't believe it! Chappell Roan broke into my house, stole all my easter eggs, gave my cat pronouns and called me a 'silly little baby boy' whilst laughing at my poor taste in pyjamas!!!
@TheRealHoarse Made ramen for dinner. Proper ramen, with a miso tare, steamed greens, pork-ginger meatballs, and stock I made from scratch. It was good.
Weekly tradition time: ending the week with a little shared joy.
Tell me something good.
What good thing happened in your life this week?
Saw a bluebird or found your wings, both work. Just something good.
@spear_dagger@erinoverbey Robust public health programs, sanitation, and comprehensive sewage treatments are all why we’re not all hip deep in disease outbreaks all the time.
Gay kids read thousands of books about straight
characters, yet they still grow up gay. But y'all are worried if your son, Billy, reads just one book where a penguin has two dads, he is going to wake up the next day and ask Brad to prom.
The Ornate Hawk-Eagle is one of the most beautiful hawks I’ve ever had the opportunity to encounter!
But it wasn’t easy — after waiting an entire morning, the female finally left the nest and gave me a chance to photograph her. I was lucky to see her ❤️
@KeruboSk Quilting. It used to be the way poor people kept warm - by stitching scraps, and patches together, and filling the “sandwich” of the quilt with literally anything fibrous. Now it’s ridiculously expensive.
