The Poetry Decider
The Poetry Decider@Aliteraryshadow·
I know this is probably a very "modernist" view of poetry, but I do think there's a kind of hermetic truth to a well-written poem that has nothing to do with whether any expressed feelings or "facts" in the poem have any relation to the outside world.

Joyce Carol Oates
Joyce Carol Oates@JoyceCarolOates·
so wonderful how James Joyce, who personally abhorred violence, directs Leopold Bloom on his non-violent odyssey through Dublin: a hero who repays insults with kindness, never loses his temper, shrinks from confrontations; returns home at last to the slovenly bedroom of the wife who has betrayed him with a brazenly macho suitor, quietly prepares for bed & next day's resumption of a the pacifist life. ("Ulysses")
Jeffrey Baird@Jeffreyhbaird

@JoyceCarolOates Icy hearted and cunning cruelty are aspects of Odysseus. He beats Thersites; throws Astyanax off the walls of Troy; drives Ajax to suicide; rapes and pillages the Ciccone's; threatens to kill Eurycleia if she talks; and he butchers the suitors in the most gruesome mafia hit ever.

Difficult to say, but I think writers of the past more deliberately "wrote for posterity". Writing for the present moment or inside jokes for a clique is like emulating a poet from a magazine in the 90s that no one remembers. Many poems are like dead memes on arrival as a result
James@lacinemera

Do you think in 200 years people will be reading books written today and think Wow I can't believe I can connect so well with something so old, its almost contemporary. Just as we do today. Just as I imagine people in the 1900s thought about their predecessors

The contrast of high/low culture (in writing) is a lot less compelling than it used to be.

I am very pleased to be at the vanguard of @seriouslitmag's entry into the world of chapbooks. 'A Reminder' is a story of alcoholism, profound isolation, and moments of abject human darkness, set in a murky surrealist fever dream of contemporary Chicago.

Hey all, Really liked how this book turned out, and I think you'll like it too. It's the first book in my press and it's written by the really talented @Sam_Redlark. amazon.com/dp/B0H7F627Y5

Trainee walked outside for a smoke break. Using this opportunity to eat the banana I packed in my lunch today. Gotta eat it now (2 hours early) cause it’s too suggestive to eat in front of a stranger.
