Can a UI/UX designer tell me why a lot of AAA games now always show you the controls on your HUD? I thought Halo Infinite was okay but it looks so ugly to me in Campaign Evolved

@Srirachachau IIRC you're in the LA area...if you can make it out to the AMC Glendora 12 theres a bunch of IMAX screenings there with seats, was able to get one day of yesterday. Not 70mm unfortunately tho. Regal in Ontario has a good amount of midweek IMAX 70mm matinee seats

gamedev is so terrible rn. Every day you wake up and read a news article that says "xbox filled another successful dev studio office with killer bees and locked the doors" and then some guy in the comments is like "good, no more woke"

@Thirteenthsteps I really hate wantonly they throw around the "build it yourself" argument; as if building a PC is something the average person is willing to do, let alone in a sub-10L ITX case. If you know how to build a PC, you're not the target for a Steam Machine.

Valve doesn't make the customer assemble it... Could that factor into the cost?
Joshua Richards@joshuaprichards

@Thirteenthsteps @OfficialPCMR You do that yourself. If you don't, that's on you, it's really easy and there's a million videos on how to do so. You might as well just buy a Mac and a Playstation and call it a day. Too expensive? Then change your own oil. 😜

@Fallendaydream_ @G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe it's convenient because you can plug it in, buy games on Steam, and play it. "barely any knowledge" - having someone buy, build, install OS, drivers, etc and take that jump to build their own PC (especially when it gets to SFF) is not a small task.

@baencup @G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe how is it convience to not be able to play any modern games at a consistant fps :l keep in mind theres nothing convenient about it when you can do the exact same thing with a pre built matx with barely any knowledge

Two things can be true at the same time 1) The Steam Machine is priced appropriately compared to current hardware pricing in Pre-built / DIY 2) It is not worth what they are asking for it

@G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe In this market you're barely finding 5060-class laptops in that price range in this current market. I'm sure performance will be even worse than the Steam Machine at that price. And they're absolutely not making $250-300 profit per unit on this thing.

@baencup @PyroJoe bought my msi crosshair 16 with i7-14650hx with 4070 for $900 new. They are not eating $250-300. They are probably making that much profit at least.

@G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe Nothing could justify Valve's decision. I'm sure they targeted $700-800, but this is just where the market is post-AI. They can't subsidize the cost and eat $250-350/unit. Gaming laptops are an even worse value proposition in the sub $1k space.

@baencup @PyroJoe does that justify valve's decision? they are using a last gen low end products. It is better to get a gaming laptop. It is just a product that is unjustifiably bad.

@baencup @PyroJoe Then they should buy a prebuilt that comes with newer specs, not last-gen AMD CPU and a low end LAPTOP GPU turned it in to a console. Its specs are horrible. It is genuienly bad.

@G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe it's in my initial tweet; people who want a small, plug-and-play device and want to get into the Steam/PC ecosystem. some people aren't willing to learn to build, or pay the >$100 cost to have someone build it.

@baencup @PyroJoe who is the audience? It is not the console users since it is a downgrade, it is not pc users since it is a downgrade and not upgradable. If you have neither, it still makes more sense to buy a small pc and hide it in a shelf. Cube tries to be a pc and a console and fails at both

@baencup @PyroJoe yeah that size doesn't matter when your hardware gets beaten by a rtx 2070 from 2018. Those cases I selected will fit any shelf

People keep missing the target of Steam Machine. It's not for people who know how to build a PC. It's for people who want to get into Steam but don't want a large prebuilt. It's an good machine for the size, and the price (although fucked by AI) is fair for the current market.

@G00BLEG00BLE @PyroJoe these are both at least 2x bigger than the Steam Machine - performance is better sure, but the convenience and small form factor still affords the Steam Machine value.

@baencup @PyroJoe Price is not fair. A $1000 pc will almost get double the performance even while being sff
