@BrodieOnLinux Oh wow; It's like Compiz Fusion came back from the dead with a 1990's athetic. I want this scripted as my screensaver - Not that I have that anymore? This made me want xscreensaver again; I'm in.

@bargman_john that’s so sad that you don’t know how to ssh into a remote dev machine. Maybe you’ll get a job someday.

@esrtweet Eh, just don't interact with this whole 'community' thing. Write good code, learn good code, from good people. If your on some forum fighting over hair-colors you aren't doing real work anyway. github.com/darthpjb/nixos… Tell me you don't want your homelab to look like this.

In response to my previous thread asking about the feasibility of switching to Arch, several people recommended NixOS instead. That's not going to happen, and I'm sad about it. Because technically I'm extremely attracted to the Nix model. How could I not like declarative system specification with guaranteed safe rollback? That would be ideal. As an old Lisp-head, I probably would have opted for the Guix variant that uses Guile/Scheme as an extension language. Unfortunately, I have a friend who was a long time NixOS user who bailed out last year. He's given me a detailed and hair-raising report on why. I'll get back to that. He says the design of NixOS is very Eric-shaped. He knows how much I like substituting declarative specifications driving simple engines for ad-hoc procedural logic (see for example loccount), and NixOS do be like that. Unfortunately, he also says the NixOS developer community has become dysfunctional and insane. By his account, the woke mind virus took hold, drove away a lot of capable people, and addled the brains of most of those who remained. That's why he bailed out. I have no reason to disbelieve him about this. It's a movie I've seen before. He has a secondary technical criticism that Nix has a bad case of not invented here and builds a lot of bespoke machinery that would be unnecessary if it were willing to take full use of Linux's native namespace and containerization hooks. But they want to be fully portable to things like *BSD, so that hasn't happened. The technical choice is defensible, and could be fixed. The mind-rot in the developer community probably isn't fixable. All you can usually do in cases like that is ignore the project and let it die. So, no NixOS for me. Dammit. Communists ruin everything they touch.

@TheGingerBill That's an easy answer. It requires Effort; Constant effort, by a constant human mind that knows the ABI and has to gatekeep everyone else who wants to change it for their lame usecase. You need to pay me money to do that, or be Torvald. This is why I NixOS

I don't know if a lot of people have thought why this happened. To make Linux viable for the layman, Valve had to make Proton (derived from Wine) so that Win32 API became the first and only stable ABI on Linux. Why did Linux Distro devs not care about stable ABI historically?

@LundukeJournal Broski; Your takes have been insightful; but let me provide some insight. 'Hentai' is "cartoon porn"; Sure, quality varies. But we are discussing Lisa-Simpson here, and if we start hunting humans with 'loli art' - We might have to arrest most of Japan.

There seems to be a frighteningly large number people (in Open Source) who distribute and collect pornographic material depicting children. It is deeply disturbing. Two prominent examples have surfaced over the last year: Drew Devault (developer) -- Distributed sexually explicit "art" depicting small children, including (not kidding) "kindergarteners"... and published software for cataloging such material. Brodie Robertson (YouTuber) -- Supposedly had a blog where he published "artwork" depicting naked children, and appeared to defend such pedophilia on multiple occasions. These two men are not alone. A large number of Open Source programmers (and leaders) utilize sexualized drawings of underage children as their online avatars. What makes this all even more disturbing and horrific than it already is... No Open Source organization (project, Foundation, or corporation), to my knowledge, has objected to these illegal (and deeply immoral) activities.

I don't know if anyone cares but after being cyberbullied about my weight in my video comments, over the last month I've been trying to average 10k steps a day. Currently I'm down from 98.5kg to 95kg or 217 to 209 freedom units. I need to get back to the gym as well.

The North Bay Python conference took place this weekend. According to one attendee of this Python conference, one of the key topics (both during presentations and otherwise) was, apparently, “Lunduke”. More specifically, how much they don’t like “Lunduke”. I tell ya… Rent. Free. Here’s one of the presentations forwarded on to me: youtu.be/slZsSksCX00

@Itsfoss I'd be deleting this with the rest - why is this even a thing? Are linux users incapable of running 'mkdir' - am I supposed to consider this a feature? Did windows fail so hard the potato that doesn't know how file-systems work came to visit? Just dissapointing.
