The Animal Welfare Society of South Africa has issued an urgent warning over a disturbing new hijacking tactic reportedly being used on the Cape Flats along the R300. Criminals are allegedly hanging dogs from concrete palisade walls with wire around their necks, hoping the shocking scenes will prompt motorists to stop and assist, making them vulnerable to robbery. The warning follows an incident on Sunday, 26 April, when a motorist spotted one dog hanging from a wall near Samora Machel and another trapped between concrete palisades. Suspecting it could be a trap, the motorist alerted the organisation instead of stopping. Senior Inspector Sivuyile Kilwa and Senior Nurse Michelle Henning responded quickly, but both dogs had already died from injuries and suffocation. The society says this may not be an isolated case and reflects the extreme cruelty criminals are willing to use. Motorists are urged not to stop if they encounter such scenes, but instead report it immediately to the Animal Welfare Society emergency hotline on 082 601 1761.

A 70-year-old Mpumalanga farmer, Bert Steenberg, was found dead on his farm Leeuwfontein near Kendal. His body was tied to a vehicle with rope. His family, concerned after not hearing from him, searched for him. They discovered the horrific scene. He was severely assaulted, with visible wounds to his head and face. Strangled, using a piece of the rope he was tied with and his own shirt. His body was then bound and attached to his vehicle. No arrests have been made.

We need to be honest about him

In February 2021, Adam Hefer (87) and Johanna "Tannie Duifie" Oosthuizen (84) were brutally murdered on their smallholding in Bapsfontein, Gauteng. This was their second attack. In December 2020, intruders had robbed them of cash, a firearm, cellphone, and TV, but left them unharmed. On the fatal evening, attackers ambushed the couple as they returned home around 8pm. They were assaulted and tortured before being shot. The attackers then set the house on fire, burning their bodies inside. It remains unclear what, if anything, was stolen in the final attack, as the fire destroyed much of the scene. No arrests were reported. A Bible was found between their two bodies.
