Ok, I'm apparently not good at writing parables, because nearly everyone interpreted it wrong. I used a parable because I want to respect others' service records, especially when not all the facts are out yet. So let's pivot to a much more direct analogy. In 2016, career intelligence professionals, people who had genuinely spent their lives fighting America's enemies, became convinced that a foreign power had compromised the incoming president. They had data points. Real ones. Trump had business dealings in Moscow. He said nice things about Putin on camera. People in his orbit had meetings with Russian nationals. A dossier appeared with salacious claims. Each data point individually was... a data point. But they were looking for Russia. So they found Russia. Everywhere. They were so certain they were right that they leaked to the press. They used classification authority to spy on American citizens. They presented unverified opposition research to a FISA court as intelligence. Peter Strzok texted about "insurance policies." Andrew McCabe authorized leaks. They were experienced professionals who genuinely believed the republic was in danger. Their service records were real. Their concern was sincere. And they were wrong.

I'm a Smurf. I've been hired to run counter-intelligence operations at Smurf Village. My role is political; I've personally gone up against the evil wizard Gargamel. But once I'm on the inside, I discover that Smurf Village has a relationship with a goat-riding human boy called Peewit. Peewit isn't a Smurf. He's caused a lot of damage with his antics over the years. Why is he even here? I start digging. I pull up Papa Smurf's history with Peewit. Papa Smurf has been collaborating with this kid for years. Protecting him. Making excuses for him. Why? Peewit is reckless. Peewit makes messes. But Papa Smurf keeps letting him back in. The more I dig, the more Peewit I find. He's everywhere. In every file, behind every favor, connected to every mess. A picture forms in my head: if I'm looking for Peewit everywhere and I keep finding Peewit, the only logical conclusion is that Peewit is the one controlling Papa Smurf. Then a prominent Smurf gets assassinated. They say Gargamel's people did it. Case closed, move along. But I get access to the dead Smurf's private messages. And there's Peewit. Right there in the chats. The same Peewit I've been laser-focused on all year. Pressuring him. Making demands. I bring this to Papa Smurf and his inner circle. I bring it with alarm. Papa Smurf looks at me funny. And then — just like that — I'm kicked out of the investigation. No explanation. Just... out. This is the final proof that Peewit is controlling the Smurf Village. I know what I saw. I have to get the truth out there. So I do the unthinkable. I leak the information.

On my ride-along with ICE, we pulled over a woman accused of producing and distributing pornographic content of HER OWN CHILDREN. My heart broke for those kids who will have to one day learn what she did to them. Hopefully when they’re older, they thank the people who took her out of their lives.

As part of Florida’s commemoration of America’s 250th anniversary, we have commissioned statues of the great Americans who shaped our state and our nation. Today in Hamilton County, I was proud to unveil a new statue of the county’s namesake: Alexander Hamilton. His participation in the fight for independence, his contributions to writing the Federalist Papers, his public service as a diplomat and “Father of the Treasury,” and his role as a confidante to George Washington made Hamilton an indispensable figure in our nation’s history. Hamilton had the strategic vision to see Florida’s significance long before Florida entered the Union, and though he did not live to see Florida become a state, his work helped shape our American story.

The true consequences of American and Israeli action in Iran won't be fully known to us for years to come. It was easy to be triumphalist in the early days of the Iraq War. It is easy to be triumphalist in the early days of this one. And indeed there is much to celebrate: Our military is unmatched by any fighting force in the world, Trump has firmly reestablished American deterrence, the Iranian regime -- which has been the leading state sponsor of terrorism my entire life -- is being degraded by the hour, China is far more contained than it has been in a decade or more, our allies in Israel and around the Middle East will soon be out from under the constant threat of the Mullahs. These are all enormous goods that will make America safer, stronger, and more prosperous. But while war requires bravado and confidence, we should remember the lessons of history. Nothing ever goes according to plan. Massive societal change is most always accompanied by violence, and nature abhors a vacuum. And so we should meet the moment with prayer: Prayer for our troops, prayer for our allies, prayer for the innocent in Iran and Israel and around the world in harm's way today. Prayer for the consequences we cannot plainly see. Most of all, prayer for our own hearts that we not let pride in country and hatred of evil blind us to the human cost of such an action, and that we don't let empathy and fear blind us to the evil we oppose or rob us of our will to oppose it. Resolve and humility are hard to balance.

As always I only support military action anywhere, in any context, if it directly serves the interests of American citizens. It’s troubling that the arguments we’re hearing for this war in Iran, including from Trump himself, seem to revolve primarily around “bringing freedom to the Iranian people.” As Americans, the freedom of Iranians is not our responsibility. If a single American life is lost in the service of that goal, it will be a travesty. What nobody has even come close to sufficiently explaining is how this war will first and foremost directly benefit American citizens. That is a case that needed to have been made clearly and convincingly before this move, and it wasn’t. We’re also told how this will benefit Israel, and I’m sure it will. But Israel is not America. What does it do for America? How does it help us? That needs to be explained to us. And it isn’t “panicking” or demonstrating “disloyalty” to demand those very basic answers about how American tax money, and potentially American lives, are being spent. We hear about the danger of a nuclear Iran, but that’s odd because we were told that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had already been set back decades. We hear that this war will be over quickly and easily because Iran is powerless, which I hope and pray is the case, and maybe it will be. But that’s odd, too, because if Iran is such a paper tiger then how were they a danger to us in the first place? It seems hard to argue both that Iran is an existential threat to the United States and that we can topple them in 20 minutes with no casualties or negative downstream effects. Also the political calculation really matters here. A huge majority of American oppose this. That’s just a fact. If it costs Republicans in 26 and 28, then, no matter how things work out in Iran, it will not have been worth it. A free Iran at the cost of Democrat rule here at home is a bad deal. A free Iran for an unfree America would be just about the worst trade of the century. I’m praying for our great country today.
