@notch there are some things, like putting colors into the empty neighbors instead of the solid tiles.

Voxels come with some interesting 4D-like problems. You can't just blend voxels together for the equivalent of mip mapping for 2d textures without the insides of the object becoming visible. (proof: a two voxel thick slab with a red front and a blue back. Can't downsample that!) (well ok there might be anisotropic solutions)

Sometimes I dream of Keepsake having our own engine and in total control of everything… then I wake up and want to make games 😅

Since last time I talked about programming here, I've made some changes to my life I'd like to talk about. First of all, thank you for the constructive feedback. I've gone through the documentation and figured out I need to define import aliases in both tsconfig.json and vite.config.ts (using absolute paths), and have managed to regain control of my import statements. In the future, I will claim to do better from the start.

@notch Nice, made some demos with that a few years back too, how are you dealing rays skimming the surface but never hitting, lodding it up the hierarchy till it hits/escapes ?

First day in the new Dallas office today! We're going to need programmers. Contact @BitshiftEnt if that could be you. Minimum barrier of entry, at least for the first couple of hires: * you know what O(n log n) means * you play zachlikes for fun * you're a slightly better programmer than i am

@wookash_podcast @fithisux We pretend at times that it is, using swapfile backed virtual memory. Most software isn't sound in that it assumes ram to be infinite, it gets worse when you look at thread stack memory and recursive algorithms.

This doesn’t make any sense. The whole idea is to allocate memory upfront, and manage it within your application. If you have a server and evergrowing list of connections/users/whatever - does it mean you have infinite memory? The whole take is about being upfront about your memory needs. Most applications don’t do that in hope of never reaching that limit

Honestly, why is this *not* the default approach for memory management?

@wookash_podcast Say you make a text editor, You don't how many words the user is going to type, they can just keep typing forever. So you can't preallocate the ram you'd need.

You used to be able to just create a Native GUI App in 10 seconds. No Electron, no Game Engines, no Web frameworks. Just a lean fast .EXE produced in seconds. Works on any Windows machine WITHOUT Internet connection. Software Development is actually going backwards.

@Rhopunzel Yeah as a dev if i'm thinking "you're playing it wrong" to myself, it is time to listen to the players.

By trying to force someone to play a certain way I drove them away. It taught me that even if people are playing wrong, it’s better than not playing at all. I kept that in mind with everything I designed from then on

Story time of one of my formative experiences as a developer: I volunteered designing a GTA SA:MP server and one of my ideas was using a plane between two specific spots to generate crafting materials for guns To deter using cars I put up road blocks on every route (1/2)

It makes the easy bits easier and the hard bits harder. That's pretty much my summary of a few months of game programming with ai tooling.

Next week I'll go to Breda for the Graphics Programming Conference. @GabeRundlett and I will give a presentation on Tuesday about raytracing voxels, covering methods used both in Teardown as well as our new engine. If you are also there and would like to meet up, let me know!

@Jadenfire It's deeper than that, the library the entire game ui is based on CEF, does not work on proton.

@bartwerf Also another note many if not all Steam games Workshop work just fine on Steam Deck. The reason this one doesn't is do to that odd installer but you know that's fine because of that I got to backup every mod I love & one day will play this game again when I'm back on windows..

Yeah Staxel is still nope.. See Staxel runs mods just fine on Steam Deck, ON WINDOWS STEAM DECK. See the Devs of staxel decided to be scammy & when you buy Staxel on a Steam deck your swapped to the Nintendo Switch CE dumbed down version if force proton aka windows it fails.
