A few days before the private screening of Diva, lunch with Jean-Jacques in a Chinese resto, 7ème. Across from us, alone at a table, Jeanne Moreau. At that moment, two generations of French cinéma, I mused, now passed from sight.
New York Times Arts@nytimesarts

Jean-Jacques Beineix, the French film director often credited with starting a genre of filmmaking known as the cinéma du look, died last month at 75. “There has to be at least a minimum of provocation in art,” he once said. “That’s what films should do.” nyti.ms/3HGiP5b

"In rambling on so much, Trump reveals just about everything one could ever want to know about him—his lack of discipline, his ignorance, his vanity, insecurity, and crudeness, and a mean streak that knows no limits," writes @sbg1 newyorker.com/news/letter-fr…

Constantly conflating Greenland with Iceland, falsely claiming the 2020 election in which he lost to Joe Biden was rigged, the loathsome piece of shit actually got horrible reviews on his "WORST SPEECH EVER" in Davos.

@JoyceCarolOates Trump failed Geo in school. In his woolgathering monologue in Davos, at least four times he mistakenly referred to Iceland in place of Greenland. Once, mind you, quite emphatically. @Daractenus

beginning to wonder if his handlers are allowing him as much rope as he needs to hang himself publicly each time he gives a "speech".... these lengthy Captain Queeg monologues are exposing to the world the dementia & malice that are now T***p's most prominent features. clearly he believes his own lies & silly misinformation, no one ever corrects him. Ubu Roi caused chaos but finally came to a (comical) end.
Daractenus@Daractenus

The speech Trump is now giving at Davos is absolutely demented, even by Trump standards. He's becoming more aggressive and detached from reality by the day. The prospect of a US invasion of Greenland and Canada is not just real but fast becoming inevitable with Trump in charge.

@gtconway3d What about the stress/confusion born by your Welsh Corgis, bereft of gracious lawns and tranquil space, in adapting to a high rise, trotted out on dirty sidewalks & teeming High Line. Engage a dog therapist to nurse your precious creatures' horrifying trauma of city existence.

I’m running for Congress in NY-12, my home. We have a demented, criminal president running the country like a mob operation—government by the boss, for the boss. We need Democratic fighters who will defend the rule of law and deliver government by the people. Join us.

@nytimes I recall Hitchens saying that King Charles' phrase for his better-favoured younger brother Andrew was: “the one with the Robert Redford looks”. Never thought this was fair to Robert Redford.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle next! Bet they didn’t think King Charles would strip his brother of everything—and so quickly. Only a matter of time, Harry and Meghan Mountbatten-Windsor. 🕰️ Tick tock.

@alissamarie J. Salter: "To go into NY restaurants with him & his wife..eyes turned to watch. The glory seems to be yours as well. There was a dreamlike quality, perhaps because Redford seemed to be just passing through, not really involved. It was washing over him, like a casual love affair."

@peterbakernyt Robert Kaplan refers to Trump as "post-literate" and ahistorical. Post-literates (PLs) are people who do not read books. They are absorbed in cell phones, and the passion of social media. To wit, this phenomena is not limited to the youth. @ShawnMcCreesh @StevenErlanger

what has happened politically in the US was represented in a distorted-mirror way on Twitter. before 2016 engagements were more likely to be lighter in tone & comical/surreal; the original function of Twitter was to make announcements--(information about films, bookstore signings, lectures, etc.); many special-interest accounts. then, with the shockingly strident, unprecedentedly polarizing 2016 campaign Twitter became a battleground & has continued since then through the years to a point where now anything like a nuanced opinion about anything (including the most complex, knotty subjects) will draw virulent attacks from those to whom issues are crystal-clear. the Twitter universe is Manichaean: either/or.
