The Layer 2 era wasn't innovation. It was the biggest coordinated grift in crypto history.
And we all just nodded along.
Let me be clear: L2s are completely unnecessary. They don't solve what they claim to solve. They create MORE problems than they fix.
Worse? They're centralized honeypots with one purpose.
Extract value from users while pretending to scale Ethereum.
Here's what nobody wants to admit:
🔸CENTRALIZATION
Every single major L2 has a centralized sequencer. ONE entity controls transaction ordering. ONE entity can censor you. ONE entity decides what gets included.
Arbitrum? Centralized sequencer.
Optimism? Centralized sequencer.
Base? Centralized sequencer.
zkSync? Centralized sequencer.
They'll tell you decentralization is coming soon. It's been 'coming soon' for years. Why? Because the sequencer prints money for the operators.
Why would they give that up?
🔸THEY CAN STEAL YOUR FUNDS
Most L2s have admin keys that can upgrade contracts at will. No timelock. No real governance.
Meaning the team controlling those keys can literally change the rules, freeze assets, or drain the bridge.
You're not using a decentralized protocol. You're trusting a multisig of 3-5 people you've never met.
How is that different from a traditional exchange?
It's not.
🔸THE UX IS TERRIBLE
L2s were supposed to make Ethereum easier to use.
Instead they created:
→ Bridge delays (7+ days to withdraw on some)
→ Fragmented liquidity across 20+ chains
→ Users losing funds bridging to wrong networks
→ Gas on L1 to bridge, gas on L2 to transact, gas on L1 to exit
→ Incompatible standards between L2s
New users don't understand any of this. They just know they lost their money somewhere between Arbitrum and Optimism and nobody can help them.
Great UX. Really solving adoption.
🔸IT WAS ALWAYS A CASH GRAB
Think about the incentive structure:
1. Launch L2 with VC funding
2. Collect sequencer fees (millions per month)
3. Launch token at inflated valuation
4. VCs and insiders dump on retail
5. Repeat
Arbitrum airdropped, token pumped, VCs unlocked, retail got dumped on.
Optimism airdropped, token pumped, insiders unlocked, retail got dumped on.
zkSync followed the same playbook.
Every. Single. Time.
The L2 wasn't built to scale Ethereum. It was built to create a new token for VCs to exit.
🔸THE ALTERNATIVE EXISTS
You know what actually scales, is actually decentralized, and doesn't require trusting centralized sequencers?
Layer 1 blockchains built from the ground up for speed and scale.
But admitting that means admitting Ethereum's roadmap bet wrong. And nobody in that ecosystem wants to say it out loud.
So instead we got years of L2 theater. Centralized solutions marketed as decentralized. Exit liquidity dressed up as innovation.
And the worst part?
Most people defending L2s know all of this.
They just have bags to protect.
Their VC fund is underwater on an L2 investment. Their protocol launched on Arbitrum. Their token allocation depends on the narrative staying alive.
So they keep repeating the same talking points while users keep losing money and the space keeps fragmenting.
This is why outsiders think crypto is a scam.
Because we keep defending things we KNOW are broken just to protect our positions.
The Layer 2 era didn't scale Ethereum.
It scaled the grift.
And we're all pretending not to notice.
