There are UPS, FedEx and mail delivery drivers out here in this hazardous smoke with no air conditioning in their trucks in DC. Can these companies please consider giving their workers a day off until it’s safe? I don’t know why they are still delivering in these conditions!

Smoke from Canadian wildfires is blanketing much of the U.S., triggering widespread air quality alerts as firefighters battle nearly 900 active blazes. Millions of Americans are being warned about unhealthy air as smoke stretches from Minnesota to the New Hampshire, with major cities including New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Baltimore and Washington, D.C., under warnings. The dangerous conditions have also forced evacuations in parts of Minnesota, while dramatic video shows a train crew surrounded by flames in northern Ontario before safely escaping.

@MeghanMcCain I agree that this is a repeated failure on the part of Canadian policies. I say that as a Canadian. I also remind Americans about California not properly managing it’s forest fires and if you think the smoke stops at the border, it doesn’t.

Canada refuses to properly manage its forest fires and now all our children must suffer with dangerous air quality and we're in a public health crisis. This is a repeated failure on the part of Canadian policies.

I hope people stop to reflect on this moment. We are reeling under the worst air quality on the planet because of a forest fire that was mismanaged by Doug Ford: he cut firefighters while his ministers billed us the taxpayers for lavish hotels and parties. Natural resources in Canada are provincial responsibility, including forests. Wildfire fighting is provincial responsibility. (Provinces can call on feds for emergency assistance.) Doug Ford cut wildfires budget by $70 million in 2019, and cut it a further $42 million in 2025.

Premier, no one doubts our firefighters'/emergency responders' commitment. They deserve every resource they need. But preparedness isn't measured by what you spend AFTER communities are burning. It's measured by whether you've planned for the increasingly severe fire seasons you know are coming. This year's wildfire budget was $150 million, after Ontario spent roughly $271 million last year. The Auditor General also identified significant gaps in wildfire preparedness, planning, and implementation that remain largely unresolved. Northern Ontario needs more than assurances that money will be found once the crisis is underway. We need evidence that emergency management is keeping pace with the reality we're facing.
