Sorry for the rant, but the web3 marketing layer needs some fixing. Three separate calls this week with founders who hired agencies that rank on page one, only to discover they spent far more time optimising their own search results and distribution to capture unsuspecting clients than delivering any tangible strategic results. A lot of these teams optimize for the metric buyers can evaluate (search visibility) rather than the metric buyers need (strategic capability). Founders lack the expertise to assess GTM competence, so they proxy quality through search ranking. This creates an adverse selection spiral. The agencies best at acquiring clients (SEO, Google Ads, polished positioning) are often the worst at delivering results. (Please don't box Surgence Labs into this group, though. We decided to start SEO two months ago as an internal challenge to speed-run to first-results ranking and prove to clients that we can reliably conquer that specific tiny segment of the gtm for them. I promise we spent less than 1% of our resources on this and more than 90% on our portfolio, lol). Meanwhile, operators focused on execution capability don't invest in client acquisition infrastructure. The market rewards appearance over substance because buyers can't differentiate until post-purchase. Consider what these agencies actually deliver: • Execution without strategy (campaigns disconnected from business logic) • Activity without outcomes (deliverables that don't move metrics) • Services without systems (one-off work instead of compounding infrastructure) It's rational behavior in a market with high information asymmetry. But information asymmetry cuts both ways. For competent operators, this dynamic creates structural advantage: • Competition quality is artificially suppressed • Founders are actively seeking alternatives after poor experiences • Demonstrating real strategic capability creates immediate market separation To operators considering this market: the opportunity isn't crowded. It's wide open precisely because most participants optimize for client acquisition rather than client outcomes.
