@RealMikeTheVike @TheMG3D That’s standard. Often things make more sense written one way and said out loud another. Watch most tv or movies with subtitles on of native language and you’ll see the same. Usually also done by two different teams.

@TheMG3D It’s pretty evident a huge portion of the game is AI imho. Subtitles are a great example too, they’re often not the same as the voices. But similar. Fun game though

@forestryba20986 @Jonathan_Blow @gak_pdx @slatestarcodex It’s all about wages fo other positions. The cost for an hour massage in the third world is $1 in the second it’s $7 in the us $60 in the Midwest and $150 in California. US has the most earning potential, any effort has to take into account opportunity cost.

One of my favorite things on the internet was @slatestarcodex writing about Cost Disease; basically, how the costs to do anything have basically tripled, completely disconnected from labor costs, material inputs, or inflation. No economists have an explanation for why costs have gone up so much, it seems like some dark force is acting on the US economy so that - while the Europeans can build lavish infrastructure, the US is stuck at 5-6x costs to build literally everything... and this underpins our fundamental debates about everything. The Interstate Bridge is an excellent example. Back when this was killed the 2nd or 3rd time (I forgot which), the *studies* performed to explore the new bridge cost ~$200 Million. I did the back of the napkin math and those studies cost 3x, inflation adjusted, what the original entire bridge cost to build. I think the dark force economists cannot detect is a combination of things, primarily though? Grift. You need to pay off the environmentalists, you need to pay off the labor unions, you need to pay off local interest groups. Those are the grifts that use social concerns as a cover... But the real grift is the Professional Managerial Class. All the various technical entities involved in the production of anything are 3 people who know anything about the subject encased in small to large organizations where 80% of the headcount has nothing to do with the task at hand. It is a baked-in, structural grift that underpins almost the entirety of the American economy. Vast swaths of the white collar economy are basically riding the coattails of a small - eroding - segment of SMEs who do actual work.
Tren Griffin@trengriffin

The cost to replace the Interstate Bridge between Washington and Oregon increased ~ 140% from a 2022 estimate of $6 billion to a new "target" of $14.4 billion. How much of this cost is not related to actual construction and is instead fees of consultants and lawyers?

@thomasbrushdev Yes default to 1080p. If someone wants 4k they can choose it. If you really want pop up a note on first boot saying game set to 1080p medium for maximum compatibility and changes can be made in the settings menu.

Should I default to 1080p for most players for Twisted Tower (allowing them to play at 4k if they want in the options)? The game runs buttery smooth at 1080p, and 2k. But some beta testers are playing it at 4k and they really shouldn't be. It's chugging for them but they don't know to reduce the resolution

@thomasbrushdev Can you replicate play in editor? Would be best to see if all of your rigid bodies and colliders still exist. Maybe something is getting destroyed/deactivated or maybe your collision mask is getting updated. haven’t seen this issue before but most my scenes aren’t open that long

Calling out into the wilderness for help: why might collision randomly stop working in a Unity build of a game. After about 1 hour of gameplay, certain collision just STOPS working for SOME objects (doors and crates, in my case). The only way for it to start working again is by closing the application entirely. This is significant because: the player controller that has this problem is RESPAWNED entirely fresh and new if you go back to the main menu. So you'd think the issue would fix itself once going back to the main menu. Which makes me think it's something wrong with the render pipeline of physics entirely. Some kind of corruption. Any thoughts?

@TailosiveTech For people complaining about 8gb of ram I’d love to see a Mac comparison between 8 and 16 gb of ram using a similiar ssd. 16 gb has been baseline on windows without using swap for awhile but with Mac memory management and swap I am genuinely interested in what you lose w 8gb.

Apple just convinced an entire community of content creators that 8GB of memory is acceptable for the right price. After a year of everyone praising Apple for making 16GB the default option.

@andrew_n_carr I don’t know I’ve had gigabyte fiber from a cable company for 7 years at the same price as gfiber with no detected throttling. This business makes no sense for google now that there is tons of 1gig+ fiber available from competitors.

@TylerGlaiel Maybe rework fenir to use a different hunter gimick or just buff and move him to act 2. You can hit him 15 minutes into the game and it feels really unfair before you figure out the game play. Someone who knows what they are doing thinks well this is bs, it’s going to get worse.

@SeloSlav You can put web games up on itch.io right now for free. I put one up a month ago and will put one up shortly. The problem is you can’t monitize Steam is trusted by customers so devs are happy to give 30% to get far more than 30% more sales.

Web gaming is about to get very big. Within the next couple of years we will likely see a new “Newgrounds-style” ecosystem emerge. A web-native distribution layer for games that competes with platforms like Steam. There will be plenty of low-quality content at first, but the best projects will rise quickly, just like they did in the early internet era. Several trends are converging at the same time. WebGL and browser graphics are improving rapidly. Advanced shaders, GPU pipelines, and even server-side rendering make it possible to stream sophisticated visuals without requiring a powerful GPU on the player’s machine. At the same time, developers are increasingly frustrated with traditional distribution. Shipping to Steam means surrendering roughly 30 percent of revenue and operating within a closed ecosystem. The web offers a path to direct distribution and ownership. But there’s something more interesting going on. Games are becoming large-scale simulations. At their core they are agent-based models (ABMs), which are just systems where thousands or millions of actors interact according to rules and generate emergent outcomes. This is an area researchers have been exploring for decades, especially institutions like the Santa Fe Institute. Now these same ideas are colliding with modern AI and massive compute. The result will be a new kind of platform where games double as large-scale simulations of economics, warfare, industrial systems, and social behavior. Mass-scale agent orchestration inside persistent worlds creates enormous datasets for strategy, game theory, and machine learning. The intersection between gaming, AI, and simulation may end up being one of the most valuable technological frontiers of the next decade.

My next game, Twisted Tower, is about to begin beta testing (likely going to begin toward the ends of March)! Please, if you'd like to play the beta, please fill out this form so that I can start putting together a solid group of folks for testing! #responses" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">docs.google.com/forms/d/1YuUU6… There are no guarantees you'll be selected. Sorry bout that. And if you are selected, no guarantees I'll incorporate all of your feedback. Can't wait to have you play it if you're selected!

I'm not sure how much of a speedrun game Mewgenics is going to end up being in the future, but I am open to keeping some older versions of the game available on steam branches in case any of them have speed/challenge run value for people. Would just need to be informed which ones

@TylerGlaiel I’d say any branch that doesn’t have major game breaking bugs. But yes any final branch before new features or reworks. But just check pointing every once in a while I’d probably good because they can just play around the bugs if needed.
