@llbuythat @Troutski__ He (like many Canadians) was a big saver. We had $300 cars, went camping for vacations, and I had thrift store clothes. Still probably took him a decade to save $9000

@behindthenet @Troutski__ That’s pretty crazy! I wonder if there was a lot of defaulting on loans. It still would have taken us forever to save up 9K with wages in ‘86. We were frugal, too.

I have a degree from Cal and couldn't afford my own 100yr old studio apt in Oakland until I was 32. My parents didn't graduate college and bought their first home at 25 off my dad's retail assistant manager salary. Was it because I have a cell phone and they didn't?

“We've stopped making babies. We've decided that being distracted by a dopamine hit around Candy Crush might be a good way to spend your time. Not if you're a full human," former Sen. Ben Sasse says in an extended interview. cbsn.ws/4cA1Jrp

@behindthenet @Troutski__ There is more to the story here than you are saying, if this is true. My husband and I bought a 40K house in ‘86, both working, and we had to beg the bank to loan us the money. And it wasn’t about our credit score.

@mixedknuts but you have to remember that having one functioning computer put you in the top 10% of NHL execs at the time this happened

@Troutski__ I think the house was $36,000, which was roughly a year's income once he got back to work. He would buy a used car for $300 every few years. He paid the house off in < 15 years.

@neo_antiquarian There's a certain type of bro who nominally claims to be a Democrat but will support Peter Thiel because he once said something about eliminating zoning

Once again, stay away from our kids @garrytan Of course Garry doesn’t GAF about SF public schools but it’s great politics. Gets the suckers fired up about arcane issues that don’t get a a lot of coverage so they’re easy to lie about.

Apples to oranges. These are two new teams that haven’t established generational roots, and North America is very spread apart compared to Europe. Vegas is Utah/Salt Lake City’s closest opponent and is 700km away. The entirety of France is about 1000km North to South.

La « culture » du supportérisme à l’américaine. Une franchise de hockey naît dans l’Utah, et des fans de Vegas changent naturellement d’équipe. Juste parce qu’il y a enfin plus proche. En Europe, ce serait une trahison à vie. Concept fascinant.

@RedGreenBC My mom got a full-time job on Wall St w/o a degree summer 1970, quit for senior year of college, travelled after graduation, then came back to NY and found job market had collapsed. It took her ~9 years to get re-established in her career (having a kid obviously delayed things)

There’s this particular strain of parochialist nativism in American cities that’s like “It’s actually BAD for our city to be rich and important. Nobody should want to come here from anywhere else.” A quintessential “luxury belief” - any dying Rust Belt town would KILL to be SF
Y Disassembler@loomdoop

This is funny, because Scott Wiener is the quintessential San Francisco political carpetbagger. He’s from New Jersey, and moved here after Harvard at around age 30, because SF city elections are an easy entry point for careerism leading to national office.

What it’s like to live in SF: A dark money group where Y Combinator CEO Garry Tan was a board member is spending $300K on the local public school board election in support of a former KIPP charter executive.
