@Alex_DiPrima @TonyReinke Yes! I say this all the time! We assign it in our internship. I call it a book on pastoring disguised as a book on the Christian life!

Superb. Well done, @TonyReinke. One of the most helpful and truly edifying books I’ve ever read.

If scripture contains all the necessary elements it does not then follow that philosophy does not need to add anything to our formulations. Eg. Logic is necessary to create our formulations.
Eduardus Ekofius@EddyEkofo

“Scripture contains all the elements out of which theology has constructed the trinitarian dogma. Not a single essential element is lacking. Hence, philosophy does not need to add anything: even the logos-doctrine is found in the New Testament. —Bavinck, DoG, p. 275

@EddyEkofo @DirkWalstead @jonathanramont To make sense of Bavinck’s theology, though, we need to reckon with all that he said. For example, “properly speaking, a dogmatic system can never be obtained from Scripture. One would get at most a kind of Biblical Theology, or whatever else one might call this discipline.”

@EddyEkofo @DirkWalstead @jonathanramont Hey brother, I don’t think we’ve met. To be honest, I’m not sure what way you’re taking Bavinck, as I’m not aware of your work. To be clear, I think what Bav said in the original quote is true and simply what the Reformers meant by what is sometimes called sola Scriptura.

@jonathanramont To be fair to the sources, we must acknowledge and appreciate the development between Bavinck and, say, Dooyeweerd or Van Til.

@jonathanramont But he’s implicitly distinguishing between elements (matter) and forms, no?

This is like saying, "scripture contains everything we need to know for eternal life, therefore grammar does not need to add anything to our studies of it" complete non sequitur

@lukestamps One of the more baffling parts of that conversation! “Why wouldn’t God reveal more obvious proofs to a 21st century Western mind like including Einstein’s formulas in the context of an ancient near Eastern text?” If that’s not “narrow-minded,” I don’t know what is.

Christianity has a category for pretty much everything Harris wants in terms of natural knowledge and virtue. His worldview is much more intolerant and narrow-minded.

@jonathanramont Do we know what nature teaches by inference or intuition in your view? It seems to me this is a crucial neo-Thomist/neo-Calvinist divide.

Nature is not secular. It is not indifferent to God. Natural revelation/law reveals the true and living God and his requirements for us. Grace perfects nature by teaching us how we may be united to him, not that he exists or that we have duties to him. We already know those.

@JosephGilbert_ In fact, according to our theologians, the will is unable to be coerced by definition (cf. á Brakel).

@JeffreyPWiesner Now, how might we put this principle in a picture? Hmmm. What if the truths of Scripture are as beautiful and as plentiful as the crevices in the Alps or the shapes of the snowflakes there?

What if… God opened wide for preachers his book of creation to give us a limitless palette for painting our proclamations from his book of redemption? And WHAT IF… More preachers aimed to be as skilled at seeing God’s glory in nature as they are in Scripture? Me included.

The distinction between incommunicable and communicable attributes really bothers me. Human souls are simple, number lines are infinite, we will be immutable in glory etc. Conversely, God alone is good, wise, and just. Whatever we attribute to God has some creaturely analogy

@lukestamps In fact, frankly, it seems to me some recent, pop work on spirituality misses the nuances of various mysticisms (N.B. plural!)

@lukestamps A stirring read! Persuasive at least on the historical front, I think. He establishes a strong continuity on spirituality between medievals (e.g., Bernard and á Kempis) and the Dutch Further Reformation (e.g., Witsius, á Brakel, etc.)
