This is essentially similar to the sharks evolution reaching an effective plateau. If a model is built towards a specific limited domain and is essentially solved such that there is no need for changing the weights, you can move it to a hardcoded chip. This strategy would seem to be ideal for autonomous navigation systems, if not already being done by composing a system with dedicated chips with separation of concerns.
