I really REALLY don’t get angry easily. I rarely lose it. Very rarely. But as I write these words, I cannot describe to you in words how angry I am. I don’t even know if angry is the right word. Let me tell you what just happened to me. I went to get a haircut by my regular barber. There I was, minding my own business, waiting for my turn. The barber was giving some dude a haircut and doing what one does. They were talking about current events. I was sitting, listening to the conversation. Of course it didn’t take long until discussion went into politics. The man getting the haircut made a joke. He said Bibi is the worst thing that ever happened to the state of Israel. The barber and I laughed, thinking he was clearly joking. He wasn’t. He was serious. I literally had to ask him to repeat what he had just said. “Bibi is the worst thing that ever happened to Israel?” He doubled down. “Yes. The worst thing.” I could not believe my ears. “The worst thing? Worse than 10/7?” “Yes”, he said. “Worse than 10/7”. “Worse than Hamas? Bibi is worse than Hamas?” “Yes. He is.” I was speechless. Literally speechless. I tried to stop the conversation. But he wasn’t having it. “Bibi has not done a single good thing for Israel!” “Not a single thing?” I asked. “Not one?” “Nope. Not one thing.” At this point, I wasn’t backing down. I had to try and understand this man’s point of view. “He didn’t kill Nasrallah?” I asked him. “Deif?” “Haniyeh?” “Sinwar?” “IRAN???” I thought to myself there is absolutely no way he can take that away from Bibi. His response? “He brought us to the situation in the first place! He had no choice at that point! It’s his fault that any of that happened! It’s his fault that 10/7 happened! He doesn’t deserve credit for any of that!” At this point, I could feel my heart pounding and my blood pressure rising. “When Bibi gives a speech or makes an announcement, before he opens his mouth, I know he’s going to lie!” is what he said next. I wasn’t going to argue with this man about politics. Clearly that would have gone nowhere. But I did want to understand how he can say that Netanyahu did nothing good for the country! How he said Bibi is worse than Hamas! I tried to show him the logical fallacies of his statements but he was doubling and tripling down. I asked him, “How do you not give Bibi credit for attacking Iran and pulling off one of the most successful military operations in history?” “It’s Bibi’s fault that we got there in the first place!!” “Who could have done what Bibi did against Iran?” I asked him. “Who could have stood up to Biden like Bibi?” “Who would have pulled the trigger to assassinate Nasrallah despite ALL the experts predicting that such an assassination would create a massive explosion in the Middle East?” His answer? “Anyone!” “Who is anyone? Who could replace Bibi? Give me a name.” Then he said something that made all of his other insane statements seem sane. “Lapid.” He literally said, with a straight face I might add, that Lapid could have run this war and this country the way Netanyahu has. I had no words. Then he continued to double down. “Bibi is a smart man”, he says, “But that’s irrelevant because he doesn’t call the shots, his wife does.” At this point, both the barber and myself kind of looked at each other and realized we are dealing with a very very sick man who has zero connection to reality. The barber, being as this man was a customer, tried very hard to keep his cool and he was pretty successful at that, even though that last comment that Sara Netanyahu calls the shots clearly got under his skin. I was a little less diplomatic and I most definitely lost my cool. I still couldn’t believe what this man had just said. So I repeated my questions just to make sure I heard correctly. “Bibi is the worst thing that’s ever happened to Israel? Number one? The worst? Nothing worse has ever happened?” I asked him. Head nod. “Bibi is worse than Hamas? Worse than 10/7?” Head nod. “He did nothing good for our country? Nothing? Not one thing?” Head nod. I just couldn’t handle the words I was hearing!! “The top priority of Israel is to get him to step down.” “Top priority?” I asked him. “Number one?” Head nod. “Getting Bibi to step down is more important than bringing the hostages home?” Head nod. Forgive me for saying this, but I stand by it. This is a mental illness. For real. The hate this man has for Netanyahu is a real obsession, a real sickness, and he is not alone, far from it. You know, I didn’t vote for Bibi and I do think he should take accountability for a lot of the tragedies we’ve experienced. He is the CEO of this country. The buck stops with him. However, to say he is the WORST thing that’s ever happened to Israel? To say he’s worse than Hamas? To say he’s done nothing good? A true mental illness. Throughout this entire discussion, I promise you, I thought this man was gonna turn around to me and say “I’m kidding! Bibi is the best leader we’ve had in decades, maybe ever! Of course he deserves so much of our admiration and gratitude. I was kidding!” But that never happened. He wasn’t joking. And honestly, I didn’t even want to ask what he thinks should be done with Bibi, but if someone thinks he’s worse than Hamas and is responsible for all the loss of life in Israel, well, what would he do to him if he had the chance? I didn’t want to ask, and I don’t want to think about it. At this point, both the barber and I had to stop this conversation. It was getting both of us too emotional to continue it. We said Shabbat shalom to the man and he left. As soon as the door closed, I think I might have actually let out a yell. As soon as he left, the first person who came in to the barber shop was a very senior IDF officer. I mean someone very high ranking. It didn’t take long until he saw how worked up we were, so I told him what had just transpired. We all laughed and agreed that it’s a good thing this officer wasn’t here while this conversation was going on. He would not have been as diplomatic as us, to say the least. I’m still trying to catch my breath here. Ya know, since Bibi launched the Iran operation and achieved what we achieved, I’ve seen countless journalists and activists who, before the Iran operation saw eye to eye on many things with this man, admit that Bibi definitely deserves credit for Iran. Seeing those people thank Bibi restored my faith in humanity. They don’t like Bibi and that’s an understatement, but at least they have the integrity to give credit where credit is due. They restored my faith in humanity and this man, in one ten minute conversation, took my faith in humanity right away!! They say hatred blinds. This man deserves to have a new saying written about him. Hatred disconnects you from reality, removes your brain cells, and breaks your moral compass. I cannot describe to you the effect this man had on my physical body. I didn’t know that a short conversation can evoke anger, sadness, shock, compassion (yes, I feel very bad for him.), and many more emotions. I’m going to try really hard to not let this very sick man ruin my Shabbat but it’s gonna require a lot of effort on my part. Here is my barber and me after the dude left. 😳😳
