Devastating news out of Los Angeles, CA.
Waymo blows through back to back crosswalks leaving jogger and a pedestrian stunned.
Sadly, this one is likely to be the last straw for the man once known as a respected autonomous vehicle safety expert @RealDanODowd who is now guaranteed to demand the immediate recall of these defective vehicles.
Certainly we’ve posted some serious safety critical mistakes in the last couple of weeks by Waymo in multiple cities. But it’s hard to come up with an excuse for this flagrant violation of basic traffic laws.
Thankfully, the jogger and the pedestrian survived this case unharmed.

@garyblack00 @legendarydad9 The pony.ai domain name is for sale. How much of a threat can these guys really be?
English

@legendarydad9 There are already four players with robotaxi networks up and running: Waymo, Baidu, Zoox, Poni.ai. There will be many more. Any could put there cars on Uber/Lyft platforms.

We own both $UBER and $TSLA for different reasons. Our investment thesis on $UBER is that as autonomy becomes table stakes for remaining in the automobile business, many auto manufacturers will achieve and be granted deployment licenses for unsupervised autonomy. $UBER with 170M MAUs will by 2026 year-end offer a driverless option that reduces the cost per mile from $2/mile to $1/mile, which will dramatically increase the number of MAPCs, trips, and profits. We see $UBER Non-GAAP EPS increasing from $3/share in 2025 to $8/share by 2030. Our UBER PT is $120.
We own $TSLA because as global EV adoption increases from its current 20% to 50% by 2030, TSLA deliveries should increase from 1.7M in 2025 to 5.0M by 2030, which will cause Non-GAAP EPS to increase from $2.05 in 2025 to $12 by 2030. We expect unsupervised autonomy to sell more Teslas and increase the FSD take rate from its current 15% to 33%. Our TSLA PT is $310.

BREAKING: No FSD update
Don't expect a FSD update before Robotaxi trial in June.
It is likely that version 14 drops with the Robotaxi trial, for both Robotaxi-trial vehicles and customer vehicles.
Tesla is busy at work on this unsupervised version, that will superset the supervised features (work in both modes).
Busy means not only from an engineering perspective, but compute-wise as well. Cortex GPU's are likely running flat out both training version 14 and running validation datasets through the model. They have no cycles to mess with version 13 at this point.
Version 14 is a bigger model than version 13 and likely contains a much much larger training and validation dataset. They cannot 'spare a square'.

@emollick Another analysis of this is that only 25% of the people were really qualified to make the judgment between a real person and AI, the rest simply lacked that sense of discrimination. The Turing test needs to consider the quality of the audience.

The reason why Tesla FSD performs better with just computer vision than systems that have LIDAR and radar is a bit counter intuitive. Allow me to try to explain.
In the early days of self-driving, people thought if you built a really accurate model of what's happening around the car, then you can come up with algorithms to determine the best way to control the car through the environment.
On the surface, it seems like LIDAR and Radar would allow you to drive better as you can more precisely measure speed, distance, etc. In reality, with deep learning computer vision has gotten pretty damn accurate at determining speed and distance — so much so that the added benefit of extra sensors is negligible. When you're changing lanes, it doesn't matter if that car that's approaching you is 100 feet away or 95 feet away. What matters is, do I have time to change lanes or not? As anyone who has tried the latest FSD can see, computer vision has long since been accurate enough to make these determinations.
But deep learning gives you another super power that turns out to be critical for self-driving. While a great perception system can tell you what's happening in the present, what the self-driving car actually needs to do is predict the future. Not just how far away is that car, but what do you think it's going to do next? Is that pedestrian at the crosswalk going to cross, or are they going to stand there and wait? Subtle things like their facial expression, direction of gaze, etc that can be predictive are present in the visual spectrum and not with other sensor modalities.
So deep learning and predicting the future, not just perceiving the present, are the key to safe driving. Humans don't think about this because if we see what's in front of us we can immediately and intuitively predict what pedestrians, cyclists, and cars will do. But that's not so for computers.
In order for deep learning to work, you need a big, diverse dataset and a ton of compute. It turns out it's a lot easier to build this on camera data than with sensor modalities like radar and LIDAR.
Because cameras are so low cost, you can build them in to large fleets of millions of cars and build massive datasets. The cost and technical differences between other sensor modalities make it much more difficult and costly to build a large scale dataset. The training process becomes more complex too.
Although camera images seem inferior, they work a lot better with deep learning. And deep learning is what unlocks cutting edge AI. That is why, counter intuitively, these pure vision systems are resulting is smoother, more comfortable, and more humanlike drives than the traditional more spatial approach to self-driving.
Every human you see driving around is just using data in the visual spectrum. They don't have radars and LIDARs measuring the exact speed of every car. They just look around and know if it's safe to execute a maneuver or not.
I know it seems hard to believe that a simpler and cheaper set of sensors could actually perform better, but that is objectively what has happened. Go take a ride for the latest FSD if you don't believe me and see it for yourself. Compare to Waymo and you will see what I mean.
The way I see it, computer vision is necessary and sufficient for self-driving. It is necessary, meaning you can't do self-driving without computer vision. If your computer vision system fails but you still have LIDAR and radar active, you won't be able to read traffic lights, signs, or lane lines — you can't drive. So it is necessary for self-driving.
It is also sufficient. Computer vision alone, without any other sensor modalities, is enough to drive a car safer than a human. We know it is sufficient because all humans drive using just vision.
But Whole Mars, you ask, wouldn't adding other sensor modalities make it even safer?
Of course, in some cases additional sensor modalities may be helpful. But you need to design the vision model at the core of the system to be able to drive the car safely if all else fails.
Let's say a big rock falls off a cliff and knocks out your LIDAR. The car needs to still be able to drive safely to the service center even without it. Let's say the radar accidentally gets unplugged somehow, or is getting some interference — the car still needs to be able to drive even if these additional sensor modalities fail.
So in any case, you want a vision system at the core that is strong enough to handle the entire driving task safely on its own if all else fails. Once you have that, you can layer on additional sensor modalities on higher end vehicles if there's a benefit to doing so — but if those sensors fail, vision still needs to be strong enough to drive the car on its own.
Hope that makes sense. Let me know if you have any questions.

@dillonloomis Spot on post. Their so-called ad was embarrassing. Why don’t they hire a real ad agency?
English

Between Tesla's first few video ads on YouTube and the fact they're hiring a campaign manager, it's evident the team could use some guidance
I'm no guru but in a prior life I ran ads and social media campaigns. Most importantly though I know the Tesla story better than 99% of the population and the challenges it faces
Here are some thoughts for the Tesla ads/outreach team in no particular order:
🔹Recycling content and repurposing it as an ad isn't ideal. To quickly get started and begin gathering data it's fine, but the best ads are created from scratch with the target audience in mind
🔹 You have ~5 seconds to grab the viewer's attention. If you don't, they're moving on
🔹If you're serving ads on a vertical format (YouTube shorts), match the format. I saw a horizontal Tesla ad today on a vertical video ❌
🔹 Use Tesla's customer data to understand who the ideal customer is and then figure out what platform that demographic is on. If Elon can't stomach giving money to Facebook, I won't fight it 😅. That said, to do this optimally Tesla should test on various platforms to find the best ROI and I'd guess FB desperately needs to hear the truth about Tesla/EV's
🔹 Do everything with the audience in mind. Example: YT shorts viewers are looking to be entertained - a video about a crash test and data gathering isn't going to cut it. Additionally, the YT shorts demographic skews younger (less disposable income)
🔹 We in the $TSLA community know safety is Tesla's #1 priority, but many car buyers are considering affordability and styling/features before they think about safety (assuming mistakenly all vehicles are similar in terms of safety)
🔹 A great way to convey the Tesla safety message is to use Tesla customer testimonials. Get a few people willing to share their stories about how driving a Tesla saved their life (I've seen a few this year alone). Then highlight the nerd features (frunk crumple zone, seatbelt pretensioning, ADAS etc.)
🔹 There has been some incredible footage captured on Tesla cameras/sentry mode. The ability to view your car's live surroundings remotely (+ recording) isn't something the competition can tout
🔹 Showing off Tesla features like HVAC controls via the app and in-car gaming can be done with short skits using potential real world scenarios and humor
🔹 Tesla should be hammering on affordability with PoS tax credits and EV charging (at home and how Tesla's SuC network is not part of the public charging nightmare everyone hears about from MSM)
🔹 A simple infographic showing total cost of ownership comparisons vs. the best selling ICE competition would help shift the affordability conversation to what really matters: TCO
🔹 Fighting FUD can be catchy and educational. Start with someone complaining about (insert FUD) and then spend the rest of the ad explaining the truth, debunking common EV/charging/Tesla myths
🔹 Show the exterior (and interior) of the S3XY lineup and the awesome acceleration reactions. I've seen two Tesla video ads and in one you could not see the car at all and in the other it was being destroyed via a crash test 😅
🔹 I think it would be funny to have @elonmusk as a talking head as if he were talking directly to the viewer (like a FaceTime) and sharing why he thinks they should buy a Tesla. The goofier and more authentic, the better
I've barely scratched the surface here - Tesla has an incredible story to tell with some incredible products but the ad game is highly competitive and if my circle is any indication, there is a lot of work to do in overcoming misinformation and a lack of EV education
I'm sure @heyitsyashu has even better advice and @garyblack00 has always had a good feel for what Tesla should educate on

Islamized America:
Once again Muslims hijack public property for Islamic "prayer" - this time they seized control of the National Mall in Washington, D.C., our nation's capital.
Cries of "Allahu Akbar" echoed throughout the long, grassy National Mall which is home to iconic monuments including the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. At the eastern end is the domed U.S. Capitol, and the White House is to the north...
The four stages of Islamic conquest.
The first stage involves infiltration, where Muslims migrate to non-Muslim countries, promote Islam as peaceful, and increase their population through high birth rates.
In stage two, consolidation of power occurs, with demands for accommodation, proselytizing, and efforts to undermine non-Muslim societies.
The third stage escalates to open war with leadership and culture, leading to violence, ethnic cleansing, and imposition of Sharia law.
The final stage is the establishment of a totalitarian Islamic theocracy, eradicating all other religions and freedoms.

I’m going with full throttle sinister here, not because I am cynical, but because the incompetence itself appears to be by design (it’s a feature, not a bug).
I believe there are people at the very top of the power food chain (many who are probably unknown) who are coordinating many of these things simultaneously, using inserted political actors, with the intent to severely weaken our rights and rule of law to make way for radical new policies.
There’s a lot that we don’t know, but I believe all of these issues (southern US border, Ukraine war, refusal to prosecute and incarcerate criminals) are related, and are battles in a larger war to move all western governments to a single new government whose citizens will have far fewer basic rights.
Whoever is calling the shots appears to also want to significantly reduce the population of western countries.
Our rights and rule of law are being systematically weakened to the point where citizens will no longer have any real power to resist the sinister forces who desire total control over western populations.
They will use censorship, central bank digital currencies, and eventually the physical tracking of citizen movement at the city block level. All of these mechanisms can be used to “turn off” noncompliant citizens and completely cut them off from society in various ways, either temporarily or permanently.
We’ve seen an early taste of this with the lockdowns.
This is the way the world is heading if we don’t flex and assert the rights already guaranteed to citizens in various western countries. All we need to do is enforce our existing laws.

The answer to this question is likely so disturbing that if everyone realized the truth, there would be thunderous protests in every corner of the nation that would make every other protest before it look like a picnic.
Elon Musk@elonmusk
Why do so many American politicians from both parties care 100 times more about the Ukraine border than the USA border?

Question @elonmusk
I’m a YouTuber who does a daily livestream on both YT and Twitter Live about Tesla
I might actually be one of only a few who does a daily live show.
Wondering how does my Twitter Live get shown beyond just my own followers? Would be great if it was broadcasted like YT does it 🙏
English

@SawyerMerritt @wholemars @Tesla Should be 3 months, and then if they purchase before the end of the free trial they get a 50% discount.
English

@Tesla should beef up its referral program. Couple ideas:
• 2,000 free Supercharger miles for every new car sold via referral.
• 14 or 30 day free trial of FSD Beta. This could convince some ppl that maybe thought they didn't want it to buy it in full or subscribe. Experiencing is believing.
English

@elonmusk I think I have figured out the business model for the new Twitter.

@boltenk44 Been vaccinated five times and I wear quadruple masks and a diving helmet so I've got you beat lady.

@chrismartenson @derekp2p @BretWeinstein A YouTube strike is a badge of honor, like the GM stamp of approval. Wear it proudly, but if I were you I would put my strikable content on my private channel and use YouTube to publicize it. Your videos are amazing, keep it up.
English

As many of you know, I've joined the ranks of colleagues such as @BretWeinstein & others who have received a 2nd YT strike for presenting data around #COVID #vaccines which run counter to the corporate narrative. THIS. MUST. END. NOW.
