The American Eagle Foundation works closely with Dollywood to help rehabilitate eagles who have been injured; those who can be released are returned to the wild and Dollywood provides sanctuary to some who cannot be released. Another fun fact: when the 2016 fires devastated Gatlinburg, TN, one fire line came dangerously close to the AEF facility and the Dollywood habitat. All 40+ birds needed to be evacuated. Through a wonderful group effort of local folks (including the management of the local Bass Pro, who opened the store in the middle of the night to provide every large dog crate and blanket available), every bird was hauled to safety in record time. How do I know this? AEF and Dollywood staff captured and loaded birds as quickly as humanly possible. Into the bed of my pickup truck. I hauled load after load of eagles to a safe holding facility well away from the fireline. When all the birds were safe, The local Chik-Fil-A prepared and donated a ton of food for the exhausted AEF workers. I am nobody famous. Just a local farmer and East TN native who could not sleep and was spending the hours in prayer and social media updates. When the AEF posted they needed extra supplies and support (sometime around 2 am), I called a couple of friends - a wildlife rehabber and also someone who knew the Bass Pro management, fired up my truck, and went flying down the highway to help save eagles. If I live to be 100, helping the AEF save all those eagles will be one of the finest things I ever got to be a part of. 🦅 🇺🇸 💕

Basically what they don’t tell you about birds of prey especially eagles is that they imprint so quickly on people who rescue them, they get obsessed with their rescuer. This eagle was one of those. Also fun fact Dolly Parton paid for this eagle’s salvation.
