Nicola Sturgeon on Newsround in 2022 talking to school kids about the cost of living crisis ‘My husband does most of the shopping in my household but he notices the way things are going up in the supermarkets’ Yeah right 😆😅

We're getting another round of THE AI BUBBLE IS POPPING stories, with the news about Uber/Microsoft pulling back on AI subscriptions bc their agent costs went crazy. Maybe. But, per below, GPU rental prices are still up 2x from where they were four months ago. It doesn't seem like demand is slowing down, at all. When, eg, NYC hotel prices are twice as high as they were last year, you shouldn't believe people telling you that nobody is going to NYC anymore. Maybe someone smarter than me can correct me on this logic, but if the price for accessing AI compute is skyrocketing, that's because demand is still significantly outrunning supply, which sounds to me like the opposite of the beginning of the end of a bubble.
Anjney Midha@AnjneyMidha

apparently not everyone is aware of this, so sharing it here since jan 2026, GPU rental prices are up 2x+ we are living through the covid of compute, and all the toilet paper is gone stay safe out there researchers

I see Euro A/C is in the discourse again. One time I was working for a summer in a law firm in France and I was miserable in the heat. When I asked the partner why they didn't have A/C he said, "It's bad for the lungs," as he took a long drag from his cigarette.

We have provisionally broken the UK record for highest daily minimum temperature in May... again 😮 Temperatures didn't fall below 21.3°C overnight at Kenley Airfield, making it a 'tropical night' (no lower than 20°C). Remarkably, the record was also broken yesterday.

During his divorce, Jack Welch’s first wife busted out decades of dinner invitations, seating charts, and correspondence to prove that he could not have written to the top of the corporate world without her meticulous cultivation of relationships among the elite

Dude, if we get actually good mechanized picked tea, it's gonna be a gamechanger. The American south will absolutely wreck global tea production. The labor cost bottleneck has been prohibitive for American tea, and using a cutter to harvest is a big quality loss. An actual leaf-plucker robot would allow capital-deep American farmers to get in the game on a crop which is extremely well-suited to the climate of the southeast-- so much so that its close genetic relative, the camellia flowers, grows wild without assistance!
People's Daily, China@PDChina

A humanoid robot is learning to pick tender tea leaves under the guidance of workers at a West Lake Longjing tea plantation in Hangzhou, east China’s Zhejiang Province. With AI recognition models and algorithms, the robot is capable of identifying and locating leaves that meet harvesting standards.

Describing the Great Fire in Rome which destroyed "all libraries on the Palatine," Galen reveals how precarious the preservation of knowledge was in the ancient world, stating that it is now "impossible... to find... rarities and works that were available nowhere else" which existed in these libraries. And adding that "There was also a work..by Aristotle which I carefully found and transcribed but which is now also lost, and likewise works by Theophrastus and other ancient writers.. as well as others that..did not circulate widely. Many of these I found in the libraries on the Palatine, and I managed to procure copies. But now the books on the Palatine were destroyed."
LiorLefineder@lefineder

In 192 AD a great fire destroyed many of the storehouses of Rome. Galen who left the city beforehand and left all his possessions in storage lost his books, personal writings, and many medical instruments, some of his invention. Writing to his friend on the scale of the loss: "The most dreadful matter associated with the loss of the books has escaped you, and there is no hope of recovery remaining, since all libraries on the Palatine were burned to the ground on that day." Galen mentioned that while he bared his losses well some could not handle them. When Philides the grammarian "learned that when his books were lost in the fire he wasted away from depression and grief and died." Everyone who lost a hard drive could sympathize with Philides' sorrow.

Apparently there's a volcano erupting right now in the Philippines. I'm watching a livestream when suddenly there's this extremely bright green fireball coming from a completely unrelated trajectory. Is that a meteor?

Ukraine doesn’t have the same firepower as Russia. But it does have the ability to respond to catastrophic bombing of Kyiv with massive strikes on central Moscow, something it hasn’t done so far.
Yaroslav Trofimov@yarotrof

Lavrov called Rubio, asking the U.S. to evacuate the American embassy and American citizens from Kyiv because Moscow intends to launch a campaign of systematic strikes on the Ukrainian capital. Like they haven’t been doing it for more than four years now!
