@bofre82 @scott_pianowski but, again, the movie does not mention Mark Ellis (2.7 WAR in 98 games) or Ray Durham (1.2 WAR in just 54 games) because it doesn’t fit the narrative of “castoffs and overlooked players”

@PatLovesSports @scott_pianowski It wasnt how they weren't good it was how they didn't drop off losing the combined WAR of Giambi, Damon & Isringhausen but actually improved with castoffs and overlooked players replacing them. Nobody is acting like they weren't good, its not about that. Its an economics text.

@bofre82 @scott_pianowski I get the point of Moneyball wasn’t to say “A good team one year was still a good team the next year” but we can’t act like Hatteberg, David Justice and Bradford are the only reasons why they were still good in ‘02

@PatLovesSports @scott_pianowski again, not what the book is about, it's about the aggregate. I was a season ticket holder for that season and remember it probably better than any season. Of course there was variation. Some did better. Others did worse. The story is about replacing what was lost creatively.

@bofre82 @scott_pianowski do they mention Mark Ellis or Ray Durham in the movie? no, and those 2 new players were just as impactful as Hatteberg and Bradford were the starting rotation was also significantly better in 2002 than 2001. Hudson & Zito went from 4.5 WAR to 6.9 and 7.2 respectively

@PatLovesSports @scott_pianowski You’re thinking individual and not in aggregate. The combined WAR of the core players who were on both teams increases 0.4 while the team did win a complete game. The smaller group of new players on the roster were responsible for the increased win total more than returnees.

@bofre82 @scott_pianowski replacing the talent void seems a lot easier when your SS goes from 110 OPS+ to 128 and increases his WAR by 1.5 from 2001 to 2002

@cabtot33 @scott_pianowski It was a study in economics applied to sports through analytics. The Big 3, Tejada and Chavez were effectively constants between the seasons. Giambi, Damon and Isringhausen left with nothing in return, it was about recreating lost production in the aggregate.

@bofre82 @scott_pianowski Moneyball intentionally didn’t include their 5 best players (the three aces, Tejada and Chavez). It was intentional for the casual viewer who were under the impression a bunch of middling old vets carried a team to the playoffs. It was fiction.

@EricDiemer5 @EricoLotufo @scott_pianowski I don't think analytics say Johnny Damon wasn't good. He wasn't a HOF player and wasn't treated as such back then but his career WAR is 56 and 6.1 for his last year in KC. He scored runs and got on base.

@EricoLotufo @scott_pianowski @bofre82 Exactly this.hes taking the lessons we learned from moneyball and pretending it was common sense then..it wasn’t. Baseball overvalued guys like Damon..he was able to replace him cheaply and change how players were valued across baseball..so now people say “Damon wasn’t good”

@CoachTimmyHyde Game 12 was when ND season ended after Chad left, right? It’s title or bust in my opinion every year and ND has had a longer bust cycle.

@TopTierND ND schedule BYU THEN ducked out of the series, USC was more limited on finding an opponent that would fit the schedule and there are talks of renewing with P4 rivals from the Pac once the schedule allows.

@NFL_DovKleiman The Mannings can keep producing QB clones but the game and position keep changing and mobility will play a bigger role going forward.

Insane: 14-year-old Marshall Manning is a literal replica of his legendary father, Peyton Manning. Footwork, throwing motion, and cadence are identical. 🤯🤯🤯

@tombill10 @Genetics56 Notre Dame dropped Michigan when they added the ACC agreement. USC tried to switch to early season instead of dropping and ND said they were out and scheduled BYU. Times change.

@Genetics56 I don’t understand. For about 50 years they played this game the same time every year. Why do they need to change it now.

Marcus Freeman is 40 years old. He's been a head coach for 5 seasons. Nick Saban (widely considered the best ever) won his first title in his 10th season as a head coach at age 52.

@WillieTheTiger I think there are 3 catchers who are in with a lower WAR than Posey. 2 were born in the 1800's and Roy Campanella had a career cut short due to being hit by a car and started in the Negro leagues and still won 3x the number of MVPs Buster did.

@bofre82 Posey pretty clearly blows posada out of the water though no? Barely better career totals and played 400 more games than Posey. Plus posey’s accolades. Posada really only had the championships and a few all stars.
