This is why you don't jump at every opportunity that comes your way. White House staff didn't think twice before being photographed by Christopher Anderson – a photographer who is NOTORIOUS for taking very raw, very close-up portraits. Look how that turned out. Ask some questions before saying yes to the opp. Most importantly, WHY. Why do they want to talk to you? Why are they writing this piece? If you don't think to ask, they've already got you tight by the ego. Then, ask yourself WHY you want to do this. Is it for the exposure? For the flattery? Or to get a specific message out? If you've not got a clear "why I'm doing this" when you walk into the interview, expect to totally lose control of where it goes. You have the OPTION to show up for opportunities that make sense for the story you want to tell. Don't say yes to every one of them. And for the love of all that is holy, consult your PR team first.

I was a fashion photographer for over a decade before crypto. I worked for magazines like @ELLEmagazine @marieclaire @Cosmopolitan and brands like @LouisVuitton @gucci and more. The Vanity Fair article was a setup to mock crypto and those it depicted.

@bogwitch Fully agree. I’d like to think founders specifically would question any large publication ask but that’s just my opinion. We shall see what the future holds, haha.

@WGMeets any founder is capable of doing the same thing - we all get swept up and dazzled by exciting opportunities and forget common sense sometimes. but man...wish someone would've paused and asked "why" just once

@bogwitch We all know none of them asked themselves these questions because a lot of folks in crypto think any news is good news. Now there’s even more bs thrown around for folks to not trust or dislike our community even more because of people not asking questions (or caring to).

Depends on each person individually and how they already show up/what feels authentic to them (with some polishing) Meltem didn’t say anything outright, just posted a funny meme that made it clear she doesn’t care about the discourse. That’s one strategy that works. No introspection, just move forward (thanks Marc) Devin made a tweet that lightly disputed some of what was written, backed up his relationship, and basically pulled the “this makes me stronger” move. Not a strong play with the way it was written. The last thing that should happen is a crash out or ultra defensiveness/causing more of a scene online. My recommendation would be to: 1. Leave it be (say nothing) 2. Let others know you’re very serious (by not engaging in public crashing out but instead focusing on a REAL narrative — yours/what you’re building) 3. Let others know you don’t care (a risky route, not always recommended, but can work for people like Meltem)

got a lot of messages in the last 24h, some feedback that a lot of people could benefit from: there is no excuse for using passive, indirect language in your writing if you want something, don't just say you want it as with every piece of work, you need to think about it from the audience's POV, and empathise with their situation, needs, etc, and then deliver against that be confident, be compelling, be creative, be attention grabbing, be contextually relevant don't say you want something, make a no-brainer case for why you should have the thing that's impossible to ignore

i honestly can't stop looking at this photo > why is matt rife in it? > why is kuo wearing two ties? > why did they give danny a crotch shot after he told them his trousers have a crotch hole? > why is cathie looking away? > why is novo wearing no underwear? > why is meltem's arm straight? > what is kuo worried about? > is novo drinking whisky or coke? > do any of them like each other? > imagine walking into a side event and you see this

Who is writing about this? Our target. I haven't read any tweet yet commenting on the journalist who wrote this piece. And I think is relevant so I will do. From what I can see, Clara Molot is an excellent journalist & reporter in her early 30s who covered crypto previously. NONE of her articles shows crypto in a positive way. Her prev writings about crypto were: - Crash/downturn coverage: reporting on market collapses and their human toll (her Vanity Fair piece on traders in distress) - Straight coverage of events like the Discord crypto backlash - Critical/investigative framing about crypto world with a scrutinizing eye The article is not representing us for sure, but probably gives us a signal: why a well educated 30 yo woman sees our world in this way? We need to keep working to change this perception.

This VF photo and article ("Crypto’s True Believers Demand to Be Taken Seriously") feel so off to me and I was trying to figure out why. I think it's because it feels like something that was written in the 2018 era of crypto -- where belief was almost everything the industry had going for it. blockchains and tokens were live but mostly just to gamble with. so a photoshoot that portrays crypto people as this excentric rag tag group who somehow still hang on to their weird ideals even as prices crash made sense back then. But not today.
