An old, but apt fable: A scorpion wants to cross a river but cannot swim, so it asks a frog to carry it across. The frog hesitates, afraid that the scorpion might sting it, but the scorpion promises not to, pointing out that it would drown if it killed the frog in the middle of the river. The frog considers this argument sensible and agrees to transport the scorpion. Midway across the river, the scorpion stings the frog anyway, dooming them both. The dying frog asks the scorpion why it stung despite knowing the consequence, to which the scorpion replies: "I am sorry, but I couldn't help myself. It's my character." @Wikipedia

A family member has been dealing with intense health issues over the past year. Blood cancer, bone marrow transplant, and now significant complications. They were recently inpatient. Oncologist ordered masked and gloved care, sign on door. Still a struggle to get staff to comply

Currently in the waiting room of my eye doctor’s office. Not a mask in sight but plenty of coughing, wheezing and sneezing. Of course I’m in my mask sitting far away from everyone. Happy Mask Week!

I've just received a job reference request that asked how much sick leave an applicant had taken. From an organisation that doesn't allow remote working and encourages people to come in sick. And that's how they do it. They infect you. Then discard the ones they disable.

Fun fact for the $10 billion lawsuit crowd. The IRS leak that exposed Donald Trump’s tax returns happened between August 2019 and November 2020. 405,427 other taxpayer returns were also leaked. Trump was president. His own pick, Charles Rettig, ran the IRS. The contractor who did it, Charles Littlejohn, worked on a Trump-era IRS contract and is now serving five years in federal prison. On January 29, 2026, Trump sued the IRS and Treasury for $10 billion over a breach that happened on his watch, under his commissioner, by a contractor his administration paid. He is suing the federal government he ran, for failing to stop a leak that occurred while he was running it. The taxpayer foots the bill either way.

Everything I’m seeing on hantavirus is like “this is very containable if everyone exposed quarantines [btw everyone exposed is not quarantining]. BUT DON’T PANIC.” How bout anyone in public health do their fucking job?

It's widely accepted that hantavirus transmits from rodent excreta to humans via inhalation of aerosolized virus, so I don't understand why we're so reluctant to acknowledge the inhalation route for human-to-human transmission. nytimes.com/2026/05/14/hea…
