The past 48 hours my wallet has been getting hit with dust transactions back to back and it is a good reminder that not everything landing in your wallet is harmless. For those who do not know what dusting is, it is not meant to scam you immediately. That is what makes it dangerous. The goal is to get flagged in your transaction history so it looks like we have an existing relationship. The hope is that next time you go to send funds, you pull up Etherscan, look at your recent transactions, and accidentally copy their wallet address instead of the right one (no one should ever be doing this). Beyond that it is a tracking tool. Here's where it can be scary, once that transaction is sitting in your history they can monitor every move you make from that wallet with the automated scripts. They start linking addresses together, mapping out which wallets are connected to yours, and building a detailed picture of your behavior over time. They can see what you hold, when you move it, what protocols you interact with, and how you typically operate. All of that information gets used to figure out the most effective way to target you when the right opportunity comes. Blockchain transparency is one of the best things about this technology and also one of the things you have to stay conscious of. Educate yourself, stay aware, and be intentional about what you share publicly in this space. The people running these scripts are patient and they are building a picture from every available source not just what is onchain.
