@FILTHYRICHMAGS1 @NUFCEdge He was excellent at Forest last season, so there’s a player in there, he’s got pace to burn, can beat a man and break lines. We’ve seen v little of it this season but it’s in there, Man City, USG were great. His 1st touch has been bad and at times looks too fast for his own good.

How on earth is Anthony Elanga getting paid to play football? I honestly don’t think I’ve seen a worse pro player.

@FILTHYRICHMAGS1 @NUFCEdge He’s been disappointing but to say worst player in 25 years or worst pro as initial comment lacks perspective. He’s struggling and could do with support not OTT criticism. He can still come good.

@borisofthenorth @NUFCEdge Been watching since sir bobby. No first team signing springs to mind as woeful a footballer than elanga. Theres possibly players in the same stratosphere but hes in the bottom tier. Hes obertan level for me.

@ToonPolls @NUFCEdge Agreed with Murphy but Tonali switched off, stood watching outside of the post, a minor tweak in positioning from him prevents that goal. I think Bournemouth did what Sunderland did and wanted it more, fixing the ball in where we didn’t at the other end

@lee1892Johnson Agreed Lee. I remember the moment, everyone sat back on the edge of our own third. They scored soon after. Not good enough. Howe deserves to be back by club and fans but feels like some players have given up. Need a reset

At 1 - 1 I had us losing the game, the moment I knew was when Tonali chased the GK down nobody else pressed and all other 8 or 9 of our players were in our own half, Bournemouth just one pass out  We used to go after teams go for the kill, I don’t know what this is #nufc

@petersj1985 @CoachMeron There’s not areas we can’t improve inc GK, we haven’t defended well enough but all problems stem from CF role.Put Isak or similar in this team, we would be 10-15 points better off. You can even pick games where it woudlve manifested extra points, Villa day 1 thru Palace on Sunday

@borisofthenorth @CoachMeron I think the problems have been more than just a lack of centre forwards. Only Thiaw and Hall performing well enough at the back (and they were hit by injuries). In dire need of new keepers. No improvement on Murphy at right wing. Sitting off when ahead.

I’ve backed Eddie Howe for a long time. After Crystal Palace… something changed. The narrative all season has been that extra games, fatigue, injuries & a lack of training time have been the cause of our problems… Thread 🧵

@SkySports_Keith Agreed, we got bullied in the market, don’t have the nouse to obtain players ahead of established clubs or keep hold of what we had. Panicked and overpaid for players that don’t suit us or premier league. We need to trade out of this, sell front 3 and start again.

The more you think about last summer’s transfer window, the more it has killed Newcastle’s season - and will also hamstring them in future windows. £222m worth of talent signed last summer (4 players) on the bench today, only getting a handful of minutes between them. If even two of them had been an immediate success (like Isak, Bruno G, Trippier, Burn etc were) #NUFC would be in a much stronger position and IMO in European places. In addition to the psychological problems when they go in front (25 point dropped from winning positions), it feels like there’s a real issue with staleness in the team. You can get away with one big-money signing not working out…but not 4 in one window. (NB. I think Ramsey is a player btw, but he’s not played enough due to injury).
Craig Hope@CraigHope_DM

💰 Eddie Howe when asked why £124m strikeforce Nick Woltemade & Yoane Wissa again started on the bench 🗣️ "I don't pick the team based on transfer fees. I have to pick the team based on what I see. I thought Will Osula was training well and deserved to start. I thought he played well. He took his goal well. He's got the physical attributes, the determination to do really well."

@MsiDouglas Partially agree but reality is we can’t score at other end so teams are always in it against us going into stoppage time, we then crumble. Place should’ve been buried yesterday going into last 10 as we had openings even without playing well.

Incredibly that is the 11th goal #nufc have conceded in stoppage time this season. It's cost them 6 PL points (which, if they'd not lost, would have seen them 7th) and a Champions League win against Barcelona. That suggests a weakness in mentality that needs to be addressed this summer. Significant, damaging loss today

Newcastle would be a logical next step for Iraola. As a coach, he profiles similarly to Klopp. However, he lacks the aura and personality of Jürgen Klopp. Managing a huge club like Newcastle would give him the opportunity to show if he has the character to manage the very top.

@SwedishRumble @toontong85 Lots of words but the fact is that PSR is an unlevel playing field protecting clubs with who have been allowed to spend uncontrolled in the past. It’s a concept of big clubs, European or English, to protect them. It’s working, for now. Newcastle have been slow on stadium.

Not commenting on the suitability of the “FFP rules” — while I do think football would have been in much worse shape without them — but I think the incorrect focus from teams like Newcastle is a disservice to their prospects of success. 🔺An indisputable fact is that the PL FFP rules — except during two transitional years, 2023 and 2024, when UEFA implemented new rules — have been significantly more lenient than UEFA’s FFP rules. In plain English — for any club with top 6-7 aspirations — the PL FFP rules are completely irrelevant. It’s like you have two speed limits working in parallell on one road; one gives you a fine if you drive 50 mph and the other if you drive 70 mph — and then people lobby to remove the 70 mph limit. 🔺The main driving force behind UEFA implementing their FFP rules were the 50+1 countries, and especially the German and French federation. France has had FFP rules since 1984 after a pandemic of bankruptcies. That initiative got — very very broad support — from greedy owners. FFP prohibits their clubs from spending more of their money. Claiming that the FFP rules exist because the top clubs wanted to prevent ”nouveau riche” clubs from overtaking them is simply a complete fabrication. It’s like saying that the Yes to Brexit vote won because immigrants voted for it to get more liberal immigration or something similar that completely is not in touch with reality. The Arnaut report came in 2005 for example, 3 years before UAE bought City. UEFA implemented its first licensing system in 2002, after a work that started years before that. Abramovich bought City in 2003. There had been a constant problem in football where financial injections where made into clubs, which forced other clubs that wanted to compete to spend over their means, with strained financials as a result. 🔺The current FFP rules allow for unlimited investments in the stadium, training facilities and other facilities (hotels and what not), academy and women’s teams. In addition, the current FFP rules allow for unlimited cash funding. Ie you don’t have to loan from the bank and pay interest. From this perspective — a team with strong owner backing of course have an extreme advantage. Man City has more than anyone else used that. 🔺Newcastle has not. The club paid £12.7m in interest according to the last Annual Report for 23/24. Why are Newcastle loaning money from the bank when PIF can give them an interest free loan? Why aren’t investments made in the stadium? Why aren’t investments made in the academy? Instead a ’Red Cartel’ is blamed. But the PL could scrap all the FFP rules tomorrow and it wouldn’t help any club with top 7 ambitions…

Newcastle v the system - is the 2030 vision of being one the world's biggest clubs unrealistic? Once you look under the hood you see that Squad Cost Ratio might simply reinforce the financial dominance of the Premier League's established order. #NUFC bbc.co.uk/sport/football…

@DaleJohnsonBBC Staggering thing is that the pre self reporting mitigation the recommendation was only £20m fine and 2 window suspension. V lenient already. The EPL haven’t taken this seriously have they. FA need to step in and sanction, they sanctioned Luton for similar but smaller.

@CraigHope_DM His actions on the touchline are nuts and deserving of a card every week. He should’ve got another after the game but the ref was deliberately looking away so he didn’t see what he was doing to avoid having to send him off. He thinks he’s targeted but he gets away with so much.

😡 Pep Guardiola hinting at conspiracy after being hit with two-game touchline ban tonight (he was booked after protesting decision).... #mcfc 🗣️ "When Jeremy Doku dribbles Trippier and goes alone to the box and is being pulled from behind, I'm not asking for a yellow card but it's a foul. I will defend my team. "I will tell you something - we have all the records in this country, all of them, despite everything. We have the record of the manager with the most yellow cards. I want all records and now I have it. "Two game ban now and I will go on holidays the next two games. Oh my god. Oh my god. There are things after 10 years I cannot understand. Review the action. Of course I’m going to defend Doku and all my teams. They continue to do it."

@slbsn This is the indirect impact of SCR et al, clubs can’t keep prices down as they need revenue to be able to invest. They can no longer keep prices low and invest to compete as investment no longer allowed. Every pound is a prisoner

@TeleFootball I’m not sure Luke is qualified to write an article on Keegan’s last days, before his time as journo and living in region. Keegan wasn’t hounded out at all. Robson neither, although fan unrest/apathy was a thing for latter. Some current fans do need to learn from this.

@LukeEdwardsTele Robson wasn’t ’drove out’ but the fans were excessive and lost perspective. It was a massive mistake on the fans part and it should be a lesson for those who weren’t around snd and a chunk of those who were. No club has a continuous upward trajectory. Some deep breaths needed

Newcastle United fans drove Sir Bobby Robson out of the club because 5th was perceived to be a failure after 3rd and 4th the previous two season and went into decline immediately. Kevin Keegan quit, exhausted, saying he’d taken the club as far as he could. Eddie Howe has achieved more than both of them. He’s hurting now. Booed off, having to take the blame for everything that’s happened over the last two years. So, take a moment and ask, who could be better? If you can’t cut the most successful manager the club has had for 70 years some slack and give him some time to get things right… #nufc
