Analyst Says Sony’s Move to Digital-Only Games Was Inevitable, Compares It to Apple Removing CD Drives Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad believes Sony’s move to all-digital was only a matter of time. He compared it to Apple removing CD drives from its laptops in 2008. At the time, many people complained, but Ahmad said, “Not a single person is complaining about it today.” Ahmad also believes Sony was always going to reach this point, saying, “If not PS6, then PS7,” because the console market is now “nearly entirely digital.” However, he says the bigger issue isn’t the end of physical games. Instead, the industry should focus on improving digital consumer rights, including game ownership, refunds, gifting, and family sharing.

Reports claim Sony believes it doesn’t need to stay in close contact with PlayStation fans because it trusts the strength of the PlayStation brand and the loyalty of its community. According to the reports, Sony expects players to keep buying its games as the company moves toward a digital-only future. They also believe the backlash over ending physical PlayStation game production will eventually stop and most players will eventually adapt to buying games digitally.

God, why do all these analysts sound like corporate mouthpieces these days? If they knew about the reactions before, why did they have to lie about the reason for their move? If they aren't afraid, why did they not tell developers?

@shinobi602 @mrpyo1 No, but they can hit them for anti-trust for not having other purchase options. Sony previously only dodged anti-trust when they removed 3rd party game codes from places like Amazon *because* they had physical games. Sony either keeps making physicals, or they get anti-trust.

@mrpyo1 That is what it says. They can't force anyone to manufacture discs. They can investigate other things, though Sony said they'll continue to have games at 'retail' with download codes. Unfortunately I'm not sure what they can investigate there.

@Edencord Does it really matter anymore? They've seen the backlash, but are still moving ahead with their decision.

I fucking give up. Sony doesn't care for consumer choice, and neither do gamers in general. I'll still be a part of gaming for as long as I can, but I hope you all enjoy getting screwd over by corporate fucks in the PS6 era and beyond. You all get what you deserve.

@benoski73 Wrong. Sony already got hit previously when that took the game codes off 3rd party platforms, and the only thing that saved them from anti-trust was the existence of physical games. The commissioner is clearly incorrect, which is honestly par for the course for the EU.
