Wow. UK's National Cancer Research Institute is to closedown after more than 20 years over concerns about its funding. I am told this infrastructure is vital to cancer clinical trials across UK. Letter today from NCRI chair:

I'd be grateful for any recommendations for country pubs with good food, child-friendly, with prospect of a nice walk afterwards, relatively near Oxford? Usually go to the lovely Jacobs Inn at Wolvercote, but looking to diversify!

On this point, my vote on the jury is: Russian use of a non-strategic nuclear weapon should result in an overwhelming conventional response by the West on Ukraine's side to eject Russia from all Ukraine that could include attacks on Russian positions in Russia. No need for nukes.
Bruno Tertrais@BrunoTertrais

(6/10) But public signals suggest to Russia that there would be no nuclear response. If so, is it a good thing (it would not be credible to agitate such a threat, and public opinions would panic)... or is it a bad thing (Putin sees us as having no guts)? The jury is out.

The world's first nuclear fusion power plant will be built in North Notts. A multi-billion pound investment in producing carbon-free nuclear energy on a commercial scale, so that North Notts can power the country once again.

@Sime0nStylites @Chelseachemist1 A referendum where 50% of electorate required to overturn current state...if you cannot be bothered to vote there is the assumption that you accept the status Quo. Ostensibly more democratic than locks.

How come it is almost more difficult to upload an accepted manuscript than doing the science in it?

New cycle lanes on Marston Road. Almost continuous, but there's a couple of new traffic islands to spoil things. It's quite simple really. Just imagine yourself cycling along and make it continuous. That wasn't hard, was it?

@Fatsloggers @andrew_lilico Persistent inability to note healthy population is requisite for prosperous state. Similar to functioning and efficient public transport, education and utilities. Often appears the endgame is a subset of superwealthy with no requirement for a state, so it doesn't matter.

@jochta More people go straight than turn, so you should always prioritise providing for the straight-ahead move. A narrow painted median (or even just a centre line) is sufficient on a not-that-busy 20mph-limit road.

Said it before and I’ll say it again, if your operation or treatment goes wrong in the private sector the first thing that will happen is you’re transferred to the NHS. @JeremyClarkson might wish to take note.

@SGriffin_Lab I thought it was set up because the consensus amongst members was that SAGE was not independent of government. Hence the 'indie' tag.

@fustrauted @david_colquhoun @JuliaHB1 Or alternatively invest in mechanisms to increase that. It is ~25x more than coal generated for example, whereas 10 years ago coal generation dwarfed renewables. Nuclear thrown in takes UK non fossil fuel generation to just under 50%.

Lower living standards for the vast majority of us living in the West aren't an incidental by-product of the Net Zero policy. It is THE PURPOSE of Net Zero. It isn't possible to achieve Net Zero without those costs. The elites knew that. Don't say you weren't warned 🤷🏻‍♀️
