Canada Post moving ahead with end of home delivery They’re “moving ahead” with stopping dead. Henceforth Canada Post will provide one service — parcel delivery — that dozens of other companies do cheaper, faster and better, while refusing to provide another service — home mail delivery — which other companies are statutorily forbidden to provide. Can we please end this farce? Or are we really going to continue to enforce a legal monopoly for Canada Post on a service it no longer performs? thestar.com/business/canad…

@CakeMcJabe the timeline should start earlier and dubas made mistakes yes. but tre is batting like .150 — he’s at a different level. and given how strong dubas has been with pittsburgh, i wonder how many of those previous mistakes were on shanahan given the reported power struggle

“The dynamic of friendship is almost always underestimated as a constant force in human life: a diminishing circle of friends is the first terrible diagnostic of a life in deep trouble: of overwork, of too much emphasis on a professional identity, of forgetting who will be there when our armored personalities run into the inevitable natural disasters and vulnerabilities found in even the most average existence. [...] But no matter the medicinal virtues of being a true friend or sustaining a long close relationship with another, the ultimate touchstone of friendship is not improvement, neither of the other nor of the self; the ultimate touchstone is witness, the privilege of having been seen by someone and the equal privilege of being granted the sight of the essence of another, to have walked with them and to have believed in them, and sometimes just to have accompanied them for however brief a span, on a journey impossible to accomplish alone.” — David Whyte

Something that’s not obvious to me. Why is it that if a clothing retailer has a clearance rack, the items are more likely to be sizes like XXL than, say, M?

Toronto doesn’t need a “Traffic Czar”, it needs political leaders with a spine. Want to know how to fix Traffic in Toronto? - Eliminate on-street parking on Arterial Roads - Dedicated Streetcar/LRT routes with signal priority, dedicated BRT lanes for major bus routes - Variable congestion pricing on highways - Proper left-hand turn lanes where they’re allowed. - Modern traffic signalling infrastructure (eg, no pedestrian delay if there are no pedestrians crossing, timing responsive to traffic conditions should one way need a lot more flow than the others etc). A Traffic Czar cannot fix a lack of political will or accountability, which is the actual problem.

It doesn't provide universal service. Universal service was supposed to be the pretext for granting it "exclusive delivery rights." It was always a bad and unnecessary idea, for the reasons monopolies usually are. Indeed, Canada Post has behaved in textbook monopolist fashion: a decades-long decline in/withdrawal of service in return for which it demanded soaring postage rates. But if it isn't even going to pretend to provide universal service, then there really isn't any reason to sustain the monopoly a minute longer. Except for those, apparently including the good folks at PSAC, who think the purpose of Canada Post is not to deliver the mail but to provide lifetime sinecures to postal workers.
PSAC-AFPC@psac_afpc

PSAC is in solidarity with postal workers! Canada Post must stay a Crown corporation, with a strong public service mandate, exclusive delivery rights, and a universal service obligation. No privatization. No deregulation. #HandsOff

It could save even more by just shutting down altogether. Remember: the service Canada Post increasingly refuses to perform — delivering the mail — is also the service over which it enjoys a legal monopoly. Private carriers are legally forbidden to provide a service that Canada Post won’t — hilariously, on the grounds that it would jeopardize Canada Post’s ability to provide universal service! None of this makes any sense.
Globalnews.ca@globalnews

Canada Post estimates it would save about $350 million per year by converting all addresses to community boxes, while providing select door delivery to those with disabilities. globalnews.ca/news/11195459/…

I fully expected Widows to win Oscars back in ‘18. This is a great Chicago-based film, fueled by an A-List cast, a strong story, and an Oscar-winning director in Steve McQueen. But for some inexplicable reason, this film didn’t earn a single Oscar nom. Can someone tell me why?

Here’s a list nobody will agree with. Top 3 sporting events that are significantly better to watch on tv than attend in person 1. Masters Sunday 2. Super Bowl 3. Final 4 This is not everything surrounding the event. Just the viewing of the actual competition.

THE ABSURDITY OF POLITICAL CLUSTERS Now the same people who are (justifiably) supporting @JMilei's unwiding of the half a dozen decades of Peronisms that crippled Argentina (centralized around protectionism) are ALSO supporting Trump's neo-Peronism.

This gets at something I think I'm as guilty of as anyone. The way we talk about "being so back" when a movie functions as a movie, ie Juror #2, I think fits into this too. We've become less engaged with the film as a film than we are on what it means in the macro
