It isn't economic pressure alone. It is also internal pressure from a restive population along with the crippling of Iran's projective military force. Also, the aim isn't to create regime change but to get a commitment to no nukes and open the Strait. So everything Pape says here is based upon false assumptions.

We might be looking at a Korean ceasefire situation in which there is never a peace treaty, but the war just ends. In this scenario, Iran will be the huge winner. No regime change. No longer under a nuclear agreement. And now they control the Strait of Hormuz.

Desperation is taking hold, and nukes are not off the table. The US and Israel are descending into desperation, to the point where the nuclear option is now being openly mentioned. Those who claimed Russia and Ukraine would lead to nuclear war, that never materialized in four years. Yet in Iran’s case, the situation is escalating rapidly. Iran has waged an asymmetric war with impressive precision and few errors. It has expended much of its limited arsenal in the process, while successfully opening a corridor for heavy missiles striking Israel directly. Israel is now nearly out of interceptors. A publication in an Israeli newspaper reports that one of Trump’s top advisors is warning that Israel may have to consider nuclear weapons. x.com/haaretzcom/sta… Why is this such a major danger? Because there is deep suspicion that Iran has already developed a small number of warheads. Its nuclear facilities have gone uninspected for many months following the 12-day war. Obviously, with so few warheads, Iran will not announce it, doing so would risk a preventive nuclear strike. But if attacked, we could face nuclear retaliation and an all-out nuclear war. American military cannot leave Iraq With an order to evacuate bases 10 days ago, military cannot leave and remain under intense fire from Iranian drones and local Shiite militias. Iran managed to open fire against almost all American bases in the region to the point that the military had to abandon these bases in a billion-dollar loss. Patriots were powerless in the face of the number of attacks. However I believe that the anti-drone systems of these bases were not strengthened for an eventual confrontation with Iran. Later I will write how this redraws the role of the American military presence in the Middle East and completely broke the confidence of Asian countries in the American ability to give them protection.
