Я бы предположил, что у всех старых метрополитенов вроде нью-йорского одна беда: всё построено так давно, что за сто лет накопилось проблем. Эту станцию открыли в 1917 году, за ~40 лет до открытия метро Санкт-Петербурга.
(интересно, а в Будапеште та же беда? там ещё старше...)

Нью-Йорк и старше и богаче Питера но почему-то проблемы с наводнениями(тем более в метро) у нас уже лет 50 как с переменным успехом, но решили, а у них почему-то до сих пор каждый раз когда идёт дождь весь город занимается дайвингом
