I think Cicero is a lot more interesting (and admirable? at least, relatable) seen not as like this paragon of uncompromising virtues but rather as a wheeler and dealer, trying frantically and constantly to contort his beliefs to meet the needs of keeping the Republic together

People losing the beautiful art of telling someone to shut the fuck up in the movie theater is heartbreaking. This is one of the times you get to be an asshole publicly and you’re 100% in the right and everyone will agree with you.

@die_rizzen We won’t have the criteria to know what is good (historically progressive) & what is bad (historically regressive) unless if we know what is good (historically progressive) & what is bad (historically regressive)?

Historically progressive does imply good and bad. Without such a distinction one cannot set up the criteria for judgment.

@stsbstn Here’s a question for you: do you think Walter Benjamin was a Marxist in any meaningful sense, & why?

@stsbstn Thank you, fascinating! I’m aware that he arrived at that position, but interested to read more about how he got there. Lately I’m less & less concerned about justifying my disagreements with “orthodox” Marxism via Marx, but it’s always a bonus when Marx happens to agree.

@ShinMarginalScr I can't think of anything from the top of my head but there's definitely been liberal (mis-)readings of Gramsci or ones reading him as some sort of continuity Italian (post-liberal) thinker

@PetricorLatente @moonsrabbit7 I’d imagine Zizek is not indifferent to the content of the projects to which people devote themselves, to say the least. Reasons can be given as to whether a given project is worthwhile, no?

@moonsrabbit7 so what about people who insist that their passion is making money and watching their bank account balances grow? They say: "This is my passion, this is bigger than me, this is what I'm willing to fight for." No family, no friendship, just a pure love of money.

@JoshuaLWatson @m966021 Are there theologians who don’t “go on & on about what God is like,” who you think normative ethicists & political philosophers should engage with?

@m966021 I do think things of value can be gleaned from engaging with the Christian tradition, but I don't think any of that value depends on taking seriously what theologians say about God.

@bilbosfootcomb If the Christian objection to Marxism is that “man does not live by bread alone,” I say fair enough: bread for all — & roses too!

The true Catholic critique is of Marxism is that it is insufficiently radical, not any nonsense about “private property” or similar modernist concept. Material analysis alone is insufficient to diagnose and remediate the suffering of workers and the poor.

Forget historically progressive. What events in history were historically regressive.
