Hey @aevershed - one more quick question for you. When we request collaborator access, we used to only have to choose the top level category on a permission to automatically have the granular permissions checked. It appears that if I do the top level check and submit a request, it leaves everything else unchecked. Is this potentially another bug in the transition?

Shopify now requires a collaborator code to request access to a store even if they have your app installed?

I hear ya. It's totally frustrating as a business owner to have to deal with interstate e-commerce sales tax. As an aside, the reason Amazon handles it and Shopify doesn’t just handle it is actually a regulatory one based upon how involved Amazon is in the facilitation of the sale (handling payment processing, facilitating support and returns, handling the transaction terms of service, etc). Shopify Tax does offer a cap on the calculations of $5,000 per year, and most Shopify sellers that I've seen come in under that cost. So if we also assume that you file monthly in each of those states (which I think is unlikely, but I'm trying to be conservative here), the maximum costs I see for you with Shopify tax calculations and Shopify tax filings would be $11,600 (with the current stated nexus obligations). It's just a hunch but you probably wouldn't hit the calculation threshold that Shopify sets so I think penciling in the $5,000 for sales tax calculations is being too conservative on the high side. I also am guessing that you don't file monthly in each of those states, so the $11,600 mark might look more like $7,000 or $8,000 on Shopify tax. While it might not be perfect where they just take care of it for you, but my guess is that it's more affordable if they can support what your business needs are. It is always possible that Avalara has something that your business needs that Shopify doesn't offer - I'm obviously not familiar with the specifics on your business’ tax needs. I do know both products pretty well, so if you want to run a price analysis, I could probably do that for you really quick to see if it'd be cheaper for you to switch to Shopify Tax.

@breezyfile @Shopify I’m paying out $11000 per year right now with Alavara and growing as we meet Nexus in more states. The bottom line is @Shopify should be doing this for its customers. I pay them right at $3000 a month for the biggest package they provide, not counting the endless apps needed

Hey @Shopify Why are you hammering your Plus members with $50 Shopify Tax filing fees PER filing? Is the $3000 I give you per month not enough? I’m paying in 140 jurisdictions. When is enough enough?

Are you paying for filings in an individual jurisdiction? For example, in a state like CO or LA which has jurisdictions that can require a separate filing for each transaction, are you being charged for each local? This was common in the past and a being compliant in CO could cost hundreds or thousands per period because a service could charge for each individual jurisdiction. Now, states like those have portals where you may file a consolidated return for most of those jurisdictions and it’s reasonable for a service to charge one flat fee for the whole set of filings in one state. So if you have 11 states that have a filing due this month, hopefully you’re being charged for just 11 filings and not 140. Happy to explain more needed or if you feel like this fits your situation and want some more info on it.

Just an idea, could you flag cases where an inferred product category would be taxed differently than the currently assigned category in any state where Shopify Tax is active? This gives the shop owner a clear signal that the classification may have real tax impact and should be reviewed. The goal could be not to replace their judgment, but to highlight potential risk so they can make an informed decision.

@mccrawf7 does Shopify tax calculate US sales tax for domestic shipping without product categories? How does a merchant manage product categories for 1000s of SKUs? Why not infer the category from HS codes like Avalara?

Who do I have in my network that is familiar with the Shopify sales tax integration? I have a couple of clients who reached nexus in a handful of states and I don’t have the mental energy to figure it out. I’m looking for ongoing support/consulting. @IraGilligan?

@tobi I don’t know what to do. I have been messaging your tax support since February because the city of Nashville charges a .5% tax in the downtown district and Shopify is not capturing it. We are paying tens of thousands of dollars that we should be collecting as a tax.

@misssterbrandon @ShopifySupport @Shopify @ShopifyEng @liam_at_shopify Hey Brandon, my work involves using Shopify Tax so your tweet caught my eye. I tested rates for a few locations in Nashville and saw what I believe to be the correct tax applied, but I'd love to take a closer look with some of the data you're looking at if you are willing.

We are simultaneously releasing an app on the Apple store and selling specialized card decks using Shopify. Of course sales tax thresholds can get a little complicated. Is there any compatibility that unions the two state sales data into Quickbooks or does Apple intentionally make this manual?

Sample of my good-trouble stories: -Hitchhiking got me a Silicon Valley Fintech job -Bribing an int'l officer to close a 6-fig deal -My experience of Brian Chesky as my AirBnb host -How I drove the CEO of Oculus VR thru a funeral procession in a graveyard accidentally -Mistakes not investing in companies now worth >$3Bn -How it feels to be shot by a TASER ("exposure") -Wrote the longest post on Quora but it got deranked for its length :( If you meet me or talk to me, I'm a ball of positive energy and always try to create value or connect people. Avalara's brilliant strategy: Raise prices, maintain clunky interface, then shut down completely in April 2025. Bold move, let's see how it works out.🙄 Meanwhile, @kintsugi_ai's over here living in 2025 with: - Month-to-month pricing (imagine that!) - Zero implementation fees (revolutionary concept) - AI that actually works without constant babysitting - A migration process that takes days, not months - Error-proof guarantee with actual financial backing They have already helped brands break up with Avalara before the inevitable "it's not you, it's me" talk in 2025. They're all saving 30-40% on compliance costs while eliminating errors. Don't wait to be dumped. Be the dumper. Make the switch while you still have leverage. Your finance team will thank you. @b1eus @Shopify lol yes it's unreal, makes zero sense -- assuming it's something to do with Avalara or Taxjar which are the two services they have linked on the dashboard. It's a pain in the ass, I don't want to have to schedule a phone call with some tax service for no reason

Hey @Shopify The fact that I have to hire a third party service to remit sales tax filings and payments to every single US state is absurd. You have ALL of the necessary data to know everything I need, please build an automated system that does this. It's 2025 come on.

@eduardbeschea 17) You can enable fling from the taxes and duties page. Finally, if you want to file on your own, go to Analytics -> Reports -> United States Sales Tax Reports, filter to the proper date range for your filing period, then click into the state. That’ll give you what you need.

@eduardbeschea 16) On that same Taxes and Duties page, you can click “Review Insights” to view the economic nexus tracked. This will help you figure out if you’ve crossed any of those economic nexus thresholds I mentioned in tweet 7.

⚠️ Must know: Shopify is secretly charging you an extra 0.35% per order They do this in order to generate some tax reports for you that you may or may not use. If that's fine with you, cool, if not, here's how to find & turn it off:
