We built the Panama Canal, but because of the Jones Act, a cargo ship from Shanghai cannot stop at LA on the way to Houston. A tanker from Saudi Arabia can’t stop at New York on the way to San Francisco. They have to go all the way back and make a direct trip, so they don’t. Now that Trump is granting waivers, look what’s happening. Massive trade flowing between our coasts via the Canal. Puerto Rico, which used to be forced to depend on foreign imports, now has massive trade with the mainland US. Lift the Jones Act permanently and lower cost of living across the Empire.

I've heard it said on here that the gap between the very rich and the rest of us has never been smaller in terms of what you can buy but tbh I find that sad. The richest people have never been richer, you'd think things like haute couture and collectible design would be more popular than ever. But it's true, everyone is buying the same factory made bullshit at every income level

In this machine I can scan 1000s pages a day and never destroy a book. No guillotine spines, no ripped the bindings.. just a normal book ready to be treasured for centuries. Any large AI company can afford this both financially and ethically.

Nobody seems to understand this but I cannot stress enough that a judge told Anthropic that training their AI models didn't constitute copyright violation as long as they 'transferred' the text instead of 'copying' it, legally necessitating the destruction of the books

It's completely unnecessary to destroy books when machines like this exist. This book scanner by Treventus for example, can scan fragile books without destroying it.

The key is that public libraries were never "proposed". People just bought books and started lending them. Of course you’d never be able to start something like this in today's vetocracy, where ten thousand boomers have to sign off on every new storefront, and every asshole with an internet connection thinks they have the authority to dictate what software Sam Altman is allowed to publish.

@ArmandDoma but armand i saw a housing development going up in the suburb where i live. there are so many more houses than what i remember growing up. i'm a 64 year old woman, and i can't imagine needing a house. who would need a house and not have one ??

🦔AI companies are bulk-buying rare books, scanning them through high-speed machines that cut the spines off, and shredding the originals. A service called ISBNdb facilitates orders of up to a million books and keeps buyers anonymous. Pre-2022 books are premium because they're free of AI-generated text. A federal judge ruled the practice is fair use because eliminating the original means only one copy exists at a time. Anthropic hired the former head of Google Books partnerships to obtain "all the books in the world." My Take This got to me. A bookseller told 404 Media that rare books with almost no surviving copies are being fed into this pipeline. Books that survived wars, fires, and centuries of handling are being shredded so an AI can learn to write a better marketing email. ISBNdb's website literally says "'AI company destroys two million books' is not a headline that generates sympathy," and they still built an entire business around making it happen quietly. They offer NDAs as a feature. They coach clients to call it "digital preservation." I've covered AI companies scraping the internet, torrenting libraries, and stealing music. This is worse because it's irreversible. You can re-upload a website. You can reprint a bestseller. You can't replace the last three copies of an 18th-century botanical text once someone shreds them for training data. And the judge said it's legal. So it's going to accelerate. "We shred rare books and offer NDAs so nobody finds out" is a legitimate business model in 2026. What a timeline. Hedgie🤗

a data center is a factory. it takes electricity in and produces a tradeable good. we have subsidized factories in this country continuously since alexander hamilton and only started getting squeamish when the factory outputs matrix multiplications instead of pickup trucks
