This is an insane dodge. - Did your agency kill Mr Smith? - No, Sir. - We have a written order from you saying to stab him until he was dead. - Ah, yes, within the agency we only call it "kill" if you use a gun. Using a knife is just "terminating". So, no, we didn't "kill" him.

🚨BREAKING: ICE agents pulled guns on an unarmed U.S. citizen in a small Minnesota town… then had to be stopped by the local police chief. This happened in St. Peter, Minnesota. A quiet southern Minnesota town A local woman was alone in her car, observing and recording ICE activity in her community. She is doing something that is fully protected under the First Amendment… observing and documenting federal agents in public. ICE notices her watching. Three federal vehicles begin chasing her, and try to force her to pull over. They eventually box her car in and three agents jump out of the vehicle in front of her… with their guns drawn… screaming at her to get out of the car. She refuses, and states her rights. The agents open her car door anyway, drag her out, force her to the ground, and handcuff her. This is all happening while she is unarmed, and alone on a country road. She suffers cuts, scrapes, and bruises as they pin her down. Her husband then arrives and starts recording. He tells them they don’t have a warrant and cannot search her car. An ICE agent dismisses him outright and says, “I’m not getting into the legality of everything.” Read that again. A federal agent, pointing guns at civilians, openly says they are not concerned with legality. ICE puts this woman into their vehicle and starts driving her toward the Twin Cities, toward a federal detention facility… even though she is a U.S. citizen. About twenty minutes into the drive, they suddenly turn around after getting a call from a supervisor. The St. Peter police chief stepped in. After her husband contacted an attorney and spoke with the police chief, the chief identified the vehicle ICE was using, took custody of the woman, and personally drove her home. ICE turned her over to local police because what they were doing was so clearly wrong. This is what is happening in America. A small-town police chief had to intervene to stop federal agents from disappearing an unarmed woman for observing them. If ICE feels comfortable pulling guns on unarmed citizens in small towns, chasing them, throwing them to the ground, and ignoring the law entirely, then no town is too small and no one is safe from ICE brutality. This is what it looks like when federal agents think they’re above the Constitution.

🚨 Another day, another video of ICE agents illegally harassing a U.S. citizen for “proof of citizenship” while she walks through her own neighborhood in Minneapolis. In the video, a woman is surrounded by masked ICE agents. One agent tells her, “Do you have ID? If not, we’ll have to put you in our car and ID you.” That statement alone is unlawful. She calmly states, “I’m a U.S. citizen.” The agent immediately demands ID anyway. She correctly explains that she is not required to carry identification while walking in her neighborhood. There is no law requiring citizens to carry papers, and ICE does not have the authority to detain someone without reasonable, articulable suspicion of a specific crime. At that point, the agents escalate. They begin asking where she was born. She responds, “Minneapolis is my home.” The agents claim they are conducting an “immigration check” and repeat the question. That is not a legal basis for detention. Citizenship is not determined by place of birth alone, and ICE has no authority to conduct random street interrogations of people not suspected of immigration violations. When she again refuses to show ID, an agent threatens, “We’re going to put you in our car then.” That is an explicit threat of unlawful detention. She says, “I should be able to walk around at 3 without being afraid for my life.” Instead of disengaging, the agent again demands ID and again demands to know where she was born. She repeats, clearly and correctly, “It doesn’t matter where I was born. I’m a U.S. citizen.” The agent then attempts intimidation, warning her that lying about being a U.S. citizen could result in federal charges, despite having no evidence she was lying and no lawful basis to continue the stop. Only after repeated refusals to comply with an illegal detention do the agents finally walk away. This wasn’t law enforcement. It was a fishing expedition, relying on fear, intimidation, and the false belief that Americans must carry papers to exist in public. If masked federal agents can threaten to kidnap a U.S. citizen off the street for refusing to answer questions they have no legal right to ask, then the question isn’t whether rights are being violated. The question is how long Americans are expected to tolerate it.

The idea made me curious enough that I ran the numbers on whether Breaking Bad still works in 2025 with modern oncology drugs and payor coverage. It mostly doesn't. In 2025, Walter White's "inoperable" cancer is usually managed with targeted therapy, and his annual costs are capped by his HMO (not solved by manufacturing meth).

This is part of why science & technology policy is hard. Roon probably knows more about malaria than 99% of Americans and has very possibly donated more to fighting it than 99.99% of Americans, but he completely misunderstands the impact of the new drug. We already have effective malaria treatments -- we just don't have the resources to deliver them immediately every time they're needed. This drug is incremental progress over what exists and is helpful to avoid treatment-resistance malaria (which is a significant problem). But it in no way means we've vanquished malaria. The new treatment is great work that Novartis, the Gates Foundation, and everyone else who worked on it should be proud of. And it's great for @tszzl to share his enthusiasm about it. But it's not going to end malaria
roon@tszzl

malaria of course has killed billions of people through human history and just like that another foe is ~vanquished

Truly it was out of curiosity: why a person with unlimited resources exhibits so little appreciation or even awareness of the things that most people value as giving meaning to life. Just minimally well to do people donate to charities, local museums & libraries & the like; they support the commonweal. & unlike the very wealthy these people pay high income taxes.

This is remarkable. Four giant dams on the Klamath River along the CA-Oregon border were taken down last year. This year, salmon migrated to the river headwaters, a 300-mile journey from the Pacific to central Oregon, for the first time since 1909. (Link in reply.)
